“This is a bad idea,” you whispered to yourself as you slid the window pane upwards. “This is such a bad idea.”
“Then why are you doing it?” your dorm mate muttered through tight lips.
“Because I’m hungry,” you groaned. “And you’re hungry. And I can’t stomach another bowl of instant ramen.”
“It’s not so bad, Y/N,” she groaned as she flopped around on the thin, uncomfortable mattress. “I mean, after awhile your mouth stops noticing how terrible the consistency of the noodles are.”
“Do you even hear yourself?” you muttered, sliding one leg over the window sill.
“No,” she whispered. “Is this a dream?”
“Just, go to sleep,” you sighed. “When you wake up, I’ll have all the finest things the 7/11 could offer.”
“And if you don’t,” she sighed. “I’ll just chalk it all up to being a really wonderful nightmare.”
Shaking your head, you slid from the dorm and onto the balcony outside of your window. You stifled a yawn as you climbed down the ironwork ladder and toward the ground. In the entirety of your life, you had never done anything like this. You were always one to follow the rules and would easily become uncomfortable when you were doing something you were blatantly instructed not to do.
Not break curfew or leave the dorm after 9 pm.
You and your fellow group members had gotten done practicing in the early hours of the morning, with not a single manager’s assistance back to the dorms. Even they were too tired simply watching you to continue at such a late hour. As a newly debuted group, you were getting the buzz you had always wanted, but not nearly the income you had hoped for. You had been living off of nearly nothing for the past three years and could hardly stand the deep and empty feeling in your stomach anymore.
With feet heavy on the pavement, you tried to stick to shadows as you made your way to the convenience store on the corner. If you were caught, you would be dead. Well, as good as dead. You would either be put on probation or kicked from the company. You were unsure if the second option was actually considered a possibility now that you had debuted, but you had seen trainees dismissed for less.
The guilt tumbled through your stomach like an old sock in a washing machine. Just as you considered turning around and making a run back to the dorm, the lights of the convenience store illuminated the sidewalk around you, prompting you to take the last few steps forward. As you pushed open the door, the bell signifying your entrance caused you to jump, your nerves surfacing more strongly than you had previously anticipated. Your shoulders slumped forward as you hid yourself amongst the isles and held your breath as your eyes scanned the contents of the shelves.
“Out a little late, huh?” a familiar chuckle filled your ears.
Biting down on your lip, you winced as you spun slowly, coming to accept the inevitability of your fate.
“When I had just debuted, I remember having a strict curfew,” Kyung sighed as he crossed his arms. His eyes glanced the entirety of your body as he grinned. “But I guess newer idols don’t have to worry about those sorts of things?”
“I-” you began, only to swallow your tongue. You had known Kyung since you were a trainee. He often made a habit to visit the practice rooms and studio to recruit new talent to feature on his songs. He liked to be there for trainees, or at the very least, lighten their mood. He was kind, smart, and funny, but a bit of a mischievous tease. Whenever he would visit the company, trainees remained close to him, partly for the advice, but mostly to flirt.
Your eyes remained locked on his face, blunt in it’s intent.
He knew you were messing up, but was finding too much joy in not verbalizing it aloud.
You stood frozen until the bell above the door sounded again, alarming that another person had entered the store. Your heart jumped into your throat as your focus skirted between the racks and landed on the solid sight of your manager.
“Shit,” you hissed, tripping over your feet as you attempted to make a break for the bathroom. You didn’t chance even the smallest glance over your shoulder until you hit the door and yanked it open. You rushed in, thanking the 7/11 Gods that it was unlocked, and pressed the button on the knob.
Closing your eyes, you hissed silent curses at yourself. You knew it was a bad idea from the beginning.
A light knock sounded on the door, causing your lungs to constrict. “Just a minute!” you croaked.
“Seems like it’ll be more than a minute,” Kyung’s voice laughed.
You let out a groan before opening the door a few inches and peering out. “What?”
“Now is that how you talk to your sunbae?” he grinned. “Long time, no see, Y/N. Why not come out and catch up?”
“You know very well why,” you groaned through barred teeth.
“Oh!” he gasped. “Is that - is that yooour manager over there?”
“Please don’t play with me,” you muttered. “This isn’t a game, Kyung.”
“Are you sure you don’t need me to call him over?” he asked, tilting his head innocently.
“No, I don’t,” you said shortly. “Just pretend like you never saw me, please.”
“Welp,” he sighed, shrugging his shoulders. “If you want me in your life, let me know.”
“Wait, Kyung!” you hissed, keeping the door slightly open. You stomped your foot as you thought better of your further instructions. “Okay, please. I need you’re help.”
“What was that?” he gasped, clutching his chest in feigned shock. “You need my...what?”
“I need your help,” you groaned. “No matter how much I may regret it in the future.”
“Hmph,” he sighed, crossing his arms, and leaning against the wall near the restroom. “Well, what’s in it for me?”
“You mean you aren’t just going to help out of the kindness of your heart?” you hissed. “Shocking.”
“You know,” he chuckled. “If you actually ran as well as you run your mouth, you’d be in great shape...and probably far, far away from this situation.”
“I am in great shape!” you pouted. “Fine, I don’t need your help. Bye, Kyung.”
Shutting the door of the of the restroom, you leaned against it, and sighed. You should’ve trusted your instincts. You should have just stayed in your dorm and suffered through another night of grumbling bellies.
Now you were locked in the bathroom of a convenience store, praying your manager would leave, but knowing he wouldn’t.
“Look, I’ll level with you,” Kyung said in a hushed voice. His tone was so barely audible you knew he was humming against the door. “I’ve done stupid stuff like this too.”
“It wasn’t stupid,” you whined. “I was hungry.”
“And you’re going to be,” he sighed. “No one said an idol life was glamorous or fun, but it’s fulfilling. You have to let the possibility of your future fill your stomach sometimes.”
“Really?” you whispered, spinning to lean your forehead against the door.
“No,” he chuckled. “I was just better at not getting caught. You have some lessons to learn.”
“Park Kyung,” you groaned. “Can you please leave me in my misery now? I have to come up with a good enough excuse to at least not get myself kicked out of the company, okay?”
“You aren’t going to get kicked out,” Kyung hummed. “Just...wait like four minutes.”
“Four - that’s an oddly precise-” you trailed, but waited nonetheless.
After around five minutes another knock hit the door. You slowly pulled it open and glanced out.
“You owe me,” Kyung grinned, pushing the door open a bit further. “Come on.”
“Thank you,” you whispered, closing your eyes before you could move. You exhaled and finally began breathing correctly for the first time since this entire situation had began.
“Now pick out some snacks,” he sighed. “And I’ll walk you home.”
“Re-really?” you said quietly.
“Really,” he nodded. “I know you came out with a purpose, so might as well accomplish it.”
You moved with a speed that was unmatched by most Olympic sprinters as you bounced from isle to isle. With your arms full of items, you finally made your way to the cashier, who had begun to ring you up. Kyung stood close by, sipping on his Slurpee with a vague expression.
“That will be-” the cashier began as Kyung stepped forward.
“Here,” he hummed, handing her his credit card. “I got it.”
“Kyung,” you sighed, shaking your head quickly. “You’ve already done enough tonight.”
“Don’t worry about it,” he hummed. “Well, until you have to. I’m sure I’ll have a favor I need from you eventually.”
Rolling your eyes, you gratefully accepted the bags being pushed toward you as the girl at the counter handed Kyung back his card. He took the bags from your hands before nodding to the door and signaling that it was time for your departure.
“I don’t know how to thank you,” you said quietly as you crossed the street and entered the alley leading to your dorm. “You really saved me tonight.”
“I would hope you would do the same for me if the roles were reversed,” he smirked. “Plus you were always one of my favorites.”
“Really?” you laughed, lifting your brows. “I could never tell.”
“Why’s that?” he asked, a knowing grin already filling his lips.
“You know why,” you said. “You weren’t exactly known for being conspicuous.”
“Conspicuous,” he scoffed. “I just liked to provide guidance for those who asked of it, but here’s a bit of guidance you didn’t ask for.”
“Oh?” you asked, coming to a halt below the ladder that led to your dorm window. The light was still warmly bathing the glass, signaling your roommate had hopes for your return.
Or she was just too tired to turn it off.
“Stop sneaking out,” he sighed. “And call me when you need snacks, deal?”
“And owe you even more favors?” you chuckled.
“Maybe if I collect enough,” he hummed. “I can use it for something really special.”
He glanced at you through his lashes and grinned. “Now do me a favor, and don’t get caught sneaking back in.”
