Bloodflood | Sebastian & Arthur

It had been days, and yet Sebastian still felt the echo of it on his cheek as though the skin remembered even when the mark had long since faded. The blow itself had been sharp, humiliating, but it was his father’s words that lingered, that burrowed deep and refused to loosen their grip.

You shall have a wife, Roderick had said, voice calm, final. Not Aoife Malconaire, Sebastian. Never her.

Sebastian knew, in a practical sense, that his father was right. He had little to offer Aoife Malconaire beyond his name, and even that was a gift his father could rescind at will. Without Roderick’s favor, he was nothing more than a prince in title alone: no lands of his own, no trade, no true independence. And yet, instead of extinguishing his feelings, the decree had stirred something defiant and dangerous inside him. A quiet, stubborn refusal to accept that his heart should be governed as ruthlessly as the empire itself.

He did not fool himself into believing he was brave enough to openly rebel. He had no illusions of surviving on his own, not truly. He did not know how common men fed themselves, or where they went when winter came hard and early. But he was determined and, more troubling still, he was beginning to realize just how far his own values diverged from his father’s. Each command, each cruelty justified as necessity, widened that rift. Sebastian could feel it stretching, thinning, threatening to snap.

At times, the thought of running surfaced unbidden: leaving the palace, the name, the expectations, and trying somehow to live a life that felt honest. But the fantasy never lasted long. He could not take Aoife with him, even if she would go. And if he stayed, if he endured, there would come a day when one of his siblings would take the throne. On that day, perhaps, Sebastian might finally be placed where he could do something. The question that gnawed at him was whether waiting for that day meant becoming complicit in all the days that came before it.

Was he truly meant to remain silent, to bow his head and absorb every edict, every cruelty, until time and death made change permissible?

He was still turning that question over when Arthur entered the chamber, boots echoing against the stone. Sebastian did not look up at first. There was a pause before Sebastian finally spoke.

“If you were not an Imperial Prince,” he asked quietly, lifting his gaze at last, “what sort of life would you have wanted to live, Arthur?”
