What are some ways that I can appear nonbinary when I'm not out?
Well firstly, there is no way to ‘look’ nonbinary. Nonbinary is not an aesthetic and theres no way to appear more or less of it because it is something that you are and that you live, not that you present. There is no ‘look’ of being nonbinary that is any more valid than any other look! All nonbinary people prefer different things in how they present (more feminine, more neutral, etc or even the kind of aesthetic they prefer like goth or something) and its more a matter of what youre comfortable with and what makes you happy than trying to conform to any ‘look.’ There is no one look just the same as there is no singular nonbinary experience or there is no gender binary!
But, I understand the desire, so (assuming you want a gender-neutral appearance) heres my advice: you want to play around with expectation. There are expectations for men and women (there shouldnt be, theyre restrictive and binary enforcing, but they exist) and there are ways to use these to make yourself look more neutral by not meeting one or the other or by trying to meet both at once. Im not very educated on fashion stuffz but there are some pretty creative ways you can do this. Ive seen people suggest wearing leggings and not pants to skew more feminine (and i suppose vice versa) and larger tops to skew more masculine (this has more to do with typical ‘mens’ styles having more space in the shoulders and arms). I think solid colors are pretty neutral as well! You can always up the ‘chaos’ factor and that works pretty well--go for bright neons and pieces which dont necessarily fit together and odds are itll end up being neurtal just by being confusing.
I’ve answered a similar ask so here something I said about it in that post that also might help:
“Accessories can also help! If you’re a jewelry fan, slap a whole bunch of it on! Mix colors and shapes and styles, wear like 5 necklaces at once and a ring on each finger! Maybe it’s just me but lots and lots of jewelry (besides looking cool as hell) also reads very androgynously just because it subverts the expectation for men (no jewelry) and women (jewelry, but not too much). Maybe try presenting your body masculinely but your face and mannerisms femininely or vice versa! Have a new look every day and no one will know what to think of what you are! Lastly, (and I mention it last because I have zero experience) you can use makeup to your advantage. You can contour your face masculinely, or just (like with jewelry) go buck wild!“
I hope that helps, and please remember that there is no nonbinary ‘look’ you need to conform to. There is no necessary conforming. Its okay to just be without changing yourself! That is just as nonbinary as making a whole new style, because YOU will always be nonbinary.
