I joke but I actually don’t think Eadwulf hates Essek, or even Trent for that matter. I imagine him as one of my favorite character types: mega repressed and dissociated but in service of functioning chillness. He really can tell himself that everything he does is “nothing personal” and “just business”. (Notably, this does not make him nice- he’s also an asshole, because you have to find some amusement and pleasure in your work, right?)
Astrid, in contrast, has never not taken anything personally once in her life. She learns that Caleb wants to steal from Trent and assumes it’s a resumption of their adolescent rivalry. She poisons her parents so she can watch them die. She wants to kill Trent not with magic but with a knife. She’s the embodiment of this

And if I had to be honest, I don’t think Milo’s crush is entirely unrequited.
