Gods all the Bobby’s were so fucking stupid and annoying. You can tell they wanted poignant storylines but they couldn’t be arsed to actually make it sing.
Surprised they just didn’t like…ship him off to Betty’s brother or something.
But christ Betty hated him which considering she didn’t get along with Sally is really saying something
If I was capable of actually having a single favorite character on The Expanse, it might be Bobby, though she's in a brawl with Camina for the position. I'm still distraught they never got to mouth off to each other. That would have been epic but I feel like there was no way the two of them backed down from a brawl so it was probably for the best.
But Bobby is a walking wall of Chekov's payoffs. First episode we meet her, we find out huh, she's ridiculous and can beat her armor in an arm wrestling contest. Then she's fighting the Hybrid, and her suit malfunctions from damage and she has to fight her suit to bring her arm up so she can shoot it in the brain stem. SET UP PAY OFF.
What else do we learn? She's a walking missile depot. Her job is to take ground, paint targets, and then hit them with high ordinance RPGs. The very first thing she does on screen is that.
Final episode, it's the last stand, and what does she do? Same thing. And the pay off feels perfect.
The Expanse managed a level of emotional catharsis I've never felt from a sci-fi show largely because every triumphant moment was built on every moment that came before. There was no 'oh shit mad queen suddenly' bullshit. Every single thing that happened came from something before.
That kind of writing detail and show without tell (they never telegraph this stuff and it would be easy to miss the pay off, I did at first) takes writers who truly love their work and are dedicated to keeping the characters central to the story.
I would love to know how they managed that with actors and writers and how it feels that cohesive.
I just took one look and knew. I paused and had to come write here. His arc hasn't yet been developed fully until now. He has simply been Sally's little brother. You see how replaceable his role was when they switched the kids.
Ladies Nights is an (unfinished) Expanse fic wherein Avasarala gets tired of politicking with male egos and invites the women of the Expanse to come drink and hash out the future of the solar system. Featuring five badass women with trust issues and very good reasons to be suspicious of each other 😅 Excerpt below the cut:
“Thank you all for coming,” Avasarala said, her amusement buried deep under her sternum. Since the invitation had specified no particular dress code beyond ‘Wear whatever the fuck you want,’ the four other attendees had shown up sporting wildly different outfits.
“Captain Drummer of Medina Station,” Avasarala said, shaking her hand. “Thank you for coming all this way. I assure you, your attendance is most valuable.” She paused. “By which I mean I won’t fucking waste your time.” Drummer nodded back pleasantly, but Avasarala caught a faint glimmer of amusement in her eyes. She was wearing a black OPA uniform with a high collar that nonetheless showed off her geometric tattoo.
“First Officer Nagata, of the Rocinante,” Avasarala said formally, and then smiled. “Naomi. It’s good to see you.” Naomi offered her a wary smile in return. She was wearing a tight-fitting black outfit that was cut low enough to show off all of her own tattoos. Both Belters were wearing mag boots, Avasarala noticed.
“Gunnery Sergeant Draper, retired,” Avasarala said, and Bobbie barked out a laugh.
“That’s a polite way of putting it,” she said bitterly. She was wearing a black cardigan over a dark red blouse and slacks, having successfully guessed not to wear her power armor. “I’m glad you came, Bobbie,” Avasarala said, and she knew her warmth was most genuine here.
“You gave me a mystery,” Bobbie admitted begrudgingly. “I have to admit I haven’t been disappointed yet.”
“And Dr. Okoye. It’s such a pleasure to meet you,” Avasarala shook her hand as well. “The work you did on Ilus was truly ground-breaking.” The scientist who’d studied the structures on Ilus/New Terra was wearing a tidy dress and sensible heels, and smiled brightly back at her.
“Thanks for inviting me,” she hesitated, but her curiosity clearly won out. “I’m sorry, but I’m not sure I know what the exact purpose of this event is?”
“I have gathered together sensible minds from the OPA, Mars, Earth, and unaligned parties to help me figure out what the fuck has happened over the last couple of years. Oh, and there will be drinking.”
