The genus Rattus, as is recognisable to humans, has potentially existed for up to 5 million years (with even earlier prototype ancestors evolving more than 50 million years ago). In that time, it survived 2 mass exinction events and effectively overtook the globe as one of the most commonly found rodents using nothing more than their wits and the convenience of human travel. Through their eons living on this planet, they have evolved hyper capable senses to allow them to survive in the most extreme environments, and in the process, have made themselves one of the most controversial mammals on earth, with most either loving or hating them and very little in-between.
