One of Dean’s absolute favourite pictures was from that time Cas found him on their small balcony, the one connected to their living-room, enjoying the early weekend morning. It was not that long after he had first moved in. Castiel came up to him, and ended up asking all sorts of questions, ever curious about his new roommate, and Dean asked him his own in return.

At some point, the conversation trailed off, and they stood together in comfortable silence. Cas took out his pack and lit up. His hair was a mess, and his stretched T-shirt collar exposed his clavicles. He leaned on the railing, right arm bent up at the elbow with his smoldering cigarette held loosely in his fingers. Cas had a tiny, gentle smile on his face, a peaceful expression, like for a moment, all his troubles had been lifted off his shoulders. The sun behind him framed him in kind, peaceful light. An angel’s halo.

If you asked when Dean fell in love with Castiel, he wouldn’t be able to say for sure. But if he had to choose, that moment would be the one that made his heart skip for the first time. He didn’t really notice himself taking the picture. Just that, Dean speculated, his mind knew to immortalize that moment, because it felt significant.
