US troops make their way through narrow sunken lanes - July 1944, Normandy, France. Most fields only had one gated entrance and were surrounded by high hedgerows, which made them ideal for German ambushes

Carabus intricatus on my treshold this morning !
Blue ground beetle (en) / Carabe embrouillé (fr). My fav bug :')
It's one of the biggest carabs we have here (Brittany, France). It usually lives in huge forests, but Brittany is covered with "bocage" - is there a name for this in english ? Anyway, it means we have trees everywhere, along the roads, along the fields, in every bit of uncultivated land, be it too steepy, too rocky or too muddy. So the little critter feels at home everywhere ! And therefore it happily does its job of terrorizing all the other little critters around (also, it eats slugs)
