Peak subtle storytelling through song is in the private and intimate life of the house when both mary and bolkonsky sing "I could hurt you, I could hurt you," and then Mary sings "but I never ever ever ever would" by herself. We don't have to be told outright that bolkonsky is emotionally abusive but that line and the way it's sung speaks so much.
