While the abolition of slavery in the US was ratified on December 6th, 1865....in Puerto Rico it was not until March 22nd ,1873!!!! That our ancestors were given their freedom!!!! "The abolition of slavery was one of the greatest rights requested by the revolutionaries in 1868. Betances from 1858 began a strong call but it was not until March 22, 1873 that it was achieved. In 1874 a group of citizens in Ponce built a small monument in memory of this historical moment, and in 1880, the first park in the Caribbean was created commemorating the abolition of slavery. Since then, the park has been located on Avenida Hostos, between Calle Salud and Marina in Ponce, in front of the Aurora Lodge."-islacaribe. Bomba is cultural resistance.
