Album Review – Bone Bats "Entry Level"
From the mailbag of severely neglected emails, I received an message from Bone Bats inviting us to review their latest effort “Entry Level” some time back and as a man of my word, here is the review. Upon initial listen the first things that pop out at me are it’s distinctly Lo-Fi, wildly unhinged instrumentation. While I can’t exactly say for certain it absolutely feels like a completely live recording that captures the intensity and power of the album in the utmost perfect fashion! Not to mention, these guys can fucking play!
The band self describes themselves as “A two-or-three piece band from west philadelphia basements playing kinda-mathy, kinda-jazzy early-modest-mouse-type indie rock songs.” To me they kind of fill the gap where Ted Nguyent used to be in the scene, but with a bit more focus and seriousness that better suits their sound. The guitar riffs range from airy to fiercely chaotic, the bass lines rarely if ever follow the guitar directly really creating a different kind of hook, the drumming is technically and stylistically all over the place in the best way possible and the vocals have an lethargic garage feel to them with a slight attitude.
“Entry Level” starts off with a wild guitar lead and vocal that follows it note for not in “Quarantine the Pabst.” With grungy undertones this song definitely begins the album with some of their most powerful stuff right up front! Half way through it gets really mathy, gets a bit quieter only to come back in the end with some amazing drum work that should either inspire or make you put your sticks down. A really catchy delayed guitar line slows everything down a bit on the next track “Cash Bone.” About a minute and a half in, the distortion clicks on and the song becomes pretty fucking anthemic! The rest of the song goes through some peaks and valleys and ends in a powerful way. An Indie, punk start to “Ghost Channel” picks the pace back up only to get real somber with some saddened riffs that are quite beautiful. The build up from about 4 minutes in till the rest of the song is really fucking awesome. Those guitar solos and blast beats at the end are completely ridiculous! “Fake Science Monthly” starts off really soft and slow but builds in a way that grabs your attention in a really awesome way! The stray guitar leads probably shouldn’t fit into this song, but they do so well. “Maybe my standards are too high” is sung in almost a gang vocal if gang vocals were really calm and reflective on a particular serious situation in live. I usually never compare a band to a major label artist but in this instance I can hear the Modest Mouse influence on “Never-Ending Sass Equation.” With that said, this song definitely has their sound heavily engrained and just has a few cues that may remind you of that band. It has this drum beat that has has a bit of an off time tempo that makes it one of my favorites on the album! It’s catchy as hell, too! The tension built through out “Weed Jeans (Jazz Chords)” demonstrates their killer ability to write awesome songs. Half way through the tension is broken and all hell breaks free with screams and heavy riffs. The end flat out fucking rules! “Bonebats.bandcamp.com” brings back the vocals that follow the guitar lead in more of a garage like aspect on this track. The bass lines are really fucking killer on this song as well. Starting off with the nutcracker classically played on guitar “Baby, You Can Extend My Metaphor” invokes a bit of a country vibe on this track. It’s a steady indie rock track that again has killer bass lines that goes completely off the wall around the 4 minute mark and eventually ends in a calming fashion. The hilariously titled “Jesus Could’ve Gotten Into Any Frat He Wanted” is another somber rocker that has a weirdness to it through out the entire track. Finally, “Selfie Destruct” ends the album on a down note initially. It rocks in certain areas but retains it’s saddened aspects through out to end this effort in the best way I could imagine.
All in all, I’m kind of pissed I sat on “Entry-Level” for so long… It’s a really amazing release from Bone Bats that if you haven’t heard it by now, definitely give it a listen! You can download it for free as it’s “Name Your Price” on bandcamp, but if all of the free downloads are gone go here! At the end of the month Thursday, April 30th they’re playing with The Author and the Illustrator, You You Dark Forest and herMajesty at The Fire! So definitely check them out at that show and to hold you off listen to this rad record below!

BONE BATS — Entry-Level (2014) handmade CDs, numbering about 20 in total. Each has a different cover art and different art drawn onto the CD. Email [email protected] if ya want one (or a shirt!).
Following the stellar example set by our peers/idols leaky soups and I tried to run away when I was 6, all of the proceeds from our digital sales from now until December 18th (when the indiegogo closes) will go directly to the Ferguson Defense Fund, which funds much, much-needed legal support to protestors risking their lives demonstrating for justice in Ferguson.
Alternatively, you can skip some fees by donating directly to the indiegogo. All our stuff will remain pay-what-you-want on our bandcamp forever so I encourage you to give directly if you can.
Yours in solidarity,
the Messrs. BAT
