Teen Book Drive for Psych Hospital

Adventist Health Vallejo Teen Book Drive

NO HARDCOVERS - NO STAPLES - NO SPIRAL BOUND! This book drive is to provide the teens in our inpatient psychiatric facility with new books.

The non-profit inpatient psychiatric hospital that I work at recently cleared out all the old, worn out, outdated and unusable books from the teen section with the help of a teen librarian. Now our shelves are empty, but she has helped us to put together a list of suitable books for teens who are struggling with depression and anxiety. If you are willing to donate any of the books on our list we'd love to get them! The list has the hospital's address on it if you're buying anything online.

We take used or new books, but please note that we cannot use anything with staples or spiral bound (metal can be used for self-harm) and NO HARDCOVERS (they do too much damage when thrown). The teens on our unit do not have access to their phones or internet while staying with us and many of them (re)turn to reading to fill some of their downtime. We will continue adding books to this list over time (currently working on the non-fiction and self-help section).

Pretty soon, hopefully before the holidays roll around, I'm going to be going through my personal library and getting rid of some books to make room for new ones. I obviously don't want to throw them away, I want to donate them. I'm not sure where to donate them though, idk if my local library accepts personal donations like that and there's no donation drop boxes in my area weirdly enough. Any suggestions on good places to donate possibly around 50 books?

Adventures in Librarian-ing

So this little kid donated a book to the library a couple weeks ago. 

They’ve been coming into the library every so often to look proudly at their book on display and tell anyone who’ll listen about how they donated THAT book, it has a sticker the librarian had them pick out that they got to sign their name on in the inside cover and everything!!!! (I saw them once excitedly insist a high schooler grab the book and open it to see the sticker, much to the high schooler’s amusement, lol).

Today they came into the library to ask me where their book was, ‘cause they’d looked around the past little while and couldn’t find it anywhere.

“Ah, that’s ‘cause it’s out right now,” I explained.

Their jaw dropped and their eyes went wide, “It’s out?!”

“Yep! It’s not here because it’s at somebody’s house right now.”

“AT THEIR HOUSE?!”

They started practically vibrating in excitement.

“Yep!”

“Like, for real?”

“Uh huh.” I grinned, “It’s the second time it’s been taken out too.”

"TWICE?! It’s been taken out TWICE already?! Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness!!!!”

Something tells me that’s all they’ll be talking about tonight at dinner. lol

SIGNAL-BOOST — The Multicultural Student Union at Indiana University Southeast is holding a book drive! They're collecting inclusive and diverse books to donate to classroom libraries in need of diversification. Look to donate books whose main characters include: Children of Color, LGBTQ+, Children with Disabilities, the Celebrations of Different Religions, books about Advocacy, and many more!

Look for their holiday themed collection boxes in the academic offices of Knobview, Crestview, Life Sciences, Hillside Hall as well as the Student O, the Commons, and the Library! For everyone who isn't local, books can be sent to:

Author Curt Eriksmoen has donated his latest book, “Fascinating North Dakotans: A Biography Series, 47 Stories About People Who Have Lived in North Dakota, Volume 9″.  The following comes from the introduction:

“Volume 9 includes 48 people who either were born here, started their careers here, moved here after achieving greatness in other geographic areas, or spent almost their entire lived in North Dakota.  Our North Dakota coverage goes back to 1826, when John Sanford arrived as the government agent of the Mandan villages along the Missouri River, and continues up to the second decade of the 21st century.  Eighteen of the people were active adults during the territorial days of Dakota.  All but four of the people in this volume lived to see North Dakota become a state, and most of those profiled were prominent individuals in North Dakota.”

I have a bunch of books Ive read and am ready to part with. Do you yake book donations?

That’s really sweet, but I don’t. I’m pretty particular about the books I pick up… even the ones for my giveaways. I’m afraid of being so particular that I’d end up turning down the majority of the books. :\ Could I suggest donating them to your local library, though? They’ll sell them as a way to raise funds to stay afloat.

Booklr: Do you use book-swapping sites? Do you prefer to swap, donate, or sell your books?

I have been using Book Mooch to refresh my library every time I have a few books that I are not in good enough condition to sell/not in demand enough for the used book store. I find that not only is this a really great, easy, and accessible way to get a lot of the books on my TBR list that were published two or more years ago, but the selection is usually varied enough for me to have some choice. So far, I haven’t had any book sent to me be lost or receive negative feedback from books I’ve sent to others. I think overall, if you’re honest about the condition and edition of the book and are willing to sometimes wait a few weeks or so for your books to come to you, it’s an excellent resource. I know there are other book swapping sites, but Book Mooch was the one I liked the most when researching them a few months ago.

Some of the used book stores I’ve gone to with my books for sale have been very selective, and I think this is not necessarily due to the condition but the books’ popularity and that a lot of the used book stores in the Washington, D.C. area are quite well stocked and established. They mainly have taken the new releases I’ve wanted to sell and that’s it.

There’s also a bookstore that I occasionally donate to and its entire profits go toward a D.C. literacy organization (shout out to Carpe Librum).
