Jessica by Bryce Courtenay (spoilers)
I read this a while ago during Janurary and then kind of forgot about the fact that I was trying to get better at posting my reviews oops.
The first half was . . . interesting to say the least. Poor Jessica could not catch a break. Her mum and sister were absolutely awful, and do I do feel like the deaths and terrible goings on were a bit plot-convinient, but oh well. I did think it was funny that after 70 pages, we were still only on the first scene where she shot the snakes.
"It's putting temptation in the way of the men, I don't like it." - George Thomas when Joe is trying to get 14-year-old Jessie a job at the shearing shed.
Also the endless mentions of Jessies slim hips. I get it, okay? 😭
"No, Jessie, it's your child, it stays in the family," Joe says somewhat guiltily.
Uh huh, I see what you're saying there.
I don't condone violence, but the one time Hester was going to get a good telling off, Joe just had to go and die, didn't he. I'm just glad it got better after book three with Solly. He was so nice. And Liquid Lunch and Mary too. The ending was really nice, even though the court case was probably dramatised like the movies. I cannot belive Bryce Courtenay killed four dogs in this book. Unbelievable.
Overall, a good read. The writing style was great and in the end I did find some characters to like. :)
