I promised a while back to write a review for Horns by Joe Hill. It took a while to come up with a decent concept, and I think I finally found the perfect pairing of words and hops, malt and theme, bitterness and literary relevance, I’m talking about pairing a book and the perfect beer. I would pair Horns and Pollyanna’s Personal Chain Letter (PCL for short). The PCL is a Russian Imperial Stout infused with vanilla beans. It’s a dark and powerful beer with some sweetness added in there, so it’s not all doom and gloom. That’s why it fits perfectly with Joe Hill’s book. Horns can be very, very dark for some people. There is a lot of religious overtones, violence, murder, etc. However it can be lighthearted and even be considered very romantic. Hill talks about young love, and what happens when something tragic happens to young love.
There are a lot of mysteries in life, and in Horns. It makes you want to read the next page instantly, but it also confuses you. PCL is complex in the same way, and you wonder what you’re tasting with each sip. Horns and PCL are not for everyone, but they will completely surprise you. Since Joe Hill is Stephen King’s son, and this book has some “horror” elements, mainly the lead character sprouting literal Devil horns and having supernatural powers, this is not a blood and guts horror book. It may be frightening at times, but it’s worth a read, as PCL is worth a taste.
