You might have heard about Citizen Science, but you might not know how to get started. I'd like to offer a few links to Zooniverse projects that you can help with! Every project starts with a tutorial to teach you what you need to know, and you can leave comments and ask for feedback on your classifications. It's a whole community!
** Note: Green Links go to Zooniverse pages. Blue Links go to related organizations websites.
Don't worry about making mistakes, either. Every data point gets reviewed by dozens or hundreds of volunteers just like you, so working together we can find the best answers.
The Zooniverse is the world’s largest and most popular platform for people-powered research.
The link above is for a new Astronomy project called "Eclipsing Binary Patrol". You can learn how to read data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and help confirm the discovery of binary star pairs!
If you would rather help with Animal science, here's a project to help Western Australia's Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions' (DBCA) "South Coast Threatened Fauna Recovery Project" protect rare animals and birds like the Gilbert's Potoroo and the Western Ground Parrot by reviewing trail cams and identifying the animals you see:
Help us protect Western Australia's rarest mammal and bird: Gilbert's Potoroo and the Western Ground Parrot.
Another timely project that lets you help people very directly is the "Sudan Road Access" project. **Note: The project team designs things to try and avoid disturbing imagery, but this works by mapping dry riverbeds (wadis) where they cross roads to help teams anticipate where supply routes for humanitarian aid might become impassable. Do not participate if you feel this might be upsetting to you. I promise, there are always a bunch of volunteers to help finish these time sensitive projects!
The Zooniverse is the world’s largest and most popular platform for people-powered research.
If none of these projects are appealing, feel free to browse the Zooniverse Projects List. There are category links you can filter by such as Arts, Space, Biology, History, Climate, Medicine, Literature, Physics and more!
I've been participating in Zooniverse projects for more than a decade. It can be a fun way to help with some fascinating science. You can donate a little time or a lot, and it's very easy to jump into when you have some spare time. Each project partners with a variety of Universities from around the world and groups like NASA and the ESA. Dive right in and find a project that interests you!
Being as anxious as I am about everything, I sat down and thought "in the midst of the covid 19 outbreak, what are some games that would be relaxing, or escapist for a time like this"
So here's a list and reasons why:
Stardew Valley: a farming game where you just, farm, make friends, life out a relaxing day to day with some chilled out music. Also, numerous hats to wear.(Available on all consoles and PC, maybe mobile phones as well)
Bloodborne: ok hear me out on this. It's a game where a virus has broken out in a city. And that virus, is afraid of you, fight off a plague by yourself as the most powerful thing in the place. Makes a person feel strong. (PS4 exclusive)
Pokémon: any of the main series, the music is chilled out, the adventure is kind, and there are reasons that people use these as go to games when they want to chill out. (Only on Nintendo consoles)
Minecraft/no man's sky/open world build your own adventure games: this one is vague, but it basically describes any game that allows you to live off the land, build a house, or a castle if you're so inclined, befriend animals, explore. Just escape.(Minecraft is available on every console ever, no mans sky is PC and PS4)
An mmorpg: RuneScape/final fantasy XIV/World of Warcraft. These games have a million things to do and are built on interacting and working with others, perfect for those going stir crazy without interaction. These games also boast a lot of playtime, and a lot of things to do which means that you won’t run out of things to do, and people to meet online in the games. (MMO’s are available on PC and PS4) These are just a few games, which I know isn’t the main focus of what people in isolation need right now. But if these help anyone just to have something to enjoy whilst self isolating, then I’m thankful. I also recommend these games for those not self isolating, but are suffering from mental health issues during this deeply distressing time. Good luck, stay safe, wash hands. All that magical stuff.
Hello, friends!
I know that right now is kind of a scary time for many, so I wanted to take a moment to make a post of free resources that you could utilize to try relax & take you mind off of things if you’re having trouble finding ways to spend your time while you’re stuck at home! (Please note: since I’m in North America, most of these are most likely limited to America & Canada, but may work in other regions. If you have any suggestions for things outside of North America, please drop me a line and I’ll see if I can include them in this post!) This is going to be a fairly long post, so please bare with me!
