making a new post because the other one is a few months old now. i’m a trans masc with mental health and (seemingly ever being added to) physical health issues that have made it impossible for me to work for a while now and i’m coming to terms recently with the fact that i won’t be able to for a while now (i feel like it’s too early to say ever). i have chronic migraines, ibs, dental issues as a result of my mental health issues, chronic wrist pain due to tendon issues that make gripping and lifting difficult as it affects my grip. i also recently hurt my lower back to the point it’s really painful especially standing/walking much and bending and so between my depression and adhd i’m struggling to even get basic tasks done lately.

i’ve been advised to do physical therapy for my back and am waiting to hear back about injections for my wrist but i also do not drive so it’s difficult either getting friends to take me or affording ubers.

because i’m not working i’m also struggling to buy basic meals for myself and medications. for weekly grocery shopping i am never able to get enough food to get me through the week so that i’m actually eating enough. i do have an interview to see if i can get food assistance but that is at the end of the month and i’m not sure if i should even expect to get them.

and if anyone could help at all, or signal boost. it would be very much appreciated. unfortunately trying to get better or even just baseline live is fucking expensive and i’m just constantly stressed and anxious.

update as things are mostly the same but we’re at a new part of the journey which is that my doctor for my wrist has essentially signed off on the fact that yes i am currently disabled by my wrist pain and weakness to the point i can’t work. he basically said this with the caveat that he does not have a diagnosis for me which the government generally wants for disability assistance, but i’m hoping they’ll accept this for food assistance.

i have an appointment for a second opinion coming up in about a week as well as physical therapy that are both downtown about a half hour away. any help with getting there would save my ass.

i have my drs appointment for my second opinion in 4 days (july 22) and have $15 in my bank account rn. even if i can get enough to make the $30 trip there i can figure out what i’m doing to get home i don’t mind waiting a few hours to see if someone can pick me up later but i need to be able to make the appointment. i also have physical therapy in the same location on the 21st but if i end up needing to reschedule that i can. i'm gonna need to talk to them about logistics anyway cause there's no way i'll be able to get there twice a week.

Oh my gooooosh this just reminds me of how many photos I have of Australian natives since they are literally native here and koalas specifically are the most common thing in every zoo. I've been lucky enough to spot koalas in the wild once or twice, but the only photos I have from those times are barely visible. Also my 'photo' equipment in general sucks compared to this very professional photography, but I wanted to share a few koala photos of my own anyway...

These are from 2018, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Despite the name, they actually have a tonne of other animals, all native. I got great photos of their raptor show, by my standards anyway.

From 2020, each a different place in or near Cairns I think (I'm limiting myself to two from each month and we were there a couple weeks). First one is probably this crocodile-focused place we went to, but I don't remember what the second one was from since we went to quite a lot of animal-focused places there. I wasn't lying about koalas being literally everywhere. xD

From just last month at Wildlife HQ... a baby! The primary reason I wanted to share these really, lol. Baby wouldn't come out from Mum's belly, and she was busy eating, so couldn't get a better view than this. When we passed again later on they had gone back to sleep and Baby was fully hidden away, so that was it.

So I do 3D modeling and printing as a hobby, and a few weeks ago I designed wheel guards meant to prevent office chairs from running over cables and clothes... or your pet's tail.

I got the idea from cowcatchers old locomotives used to have.

Anyways, yesterday I uploaded the model to Thingiverse, and just hours after uploading it, the Community Relationship Manager of the whole website left a comment suggesting I enter the model into a competition that's currently being held on the site.

So I did... and now it's in third place not even a day later. First place is $500, but the competition still has a month to go.

Then the Community Manager contacted me again, telling me they want to feature my model in an upcoming design promotion.

Just, what is happening? I mostly made this thing for myself in, like, an hour, and now it's suddenly super popular? This is all a little bit overwhelming 😵‍💫

Other models I worked on for weeks didn't get nearly as popular. I swear, it's impossible to predict what people will like.

The Exotic Animal Photo Reference Repository is live!

Here's how this repository works: all photos were taken by me, a human, at zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries, and other facilities with animals in human care. There is no AI involved in the photo editing or creation and there never will be. Right now there's 56 species on the site; my catalog has over 300 and I will be uploading the rest of them as fast as I can.

Artists creating derivative or transformative works (without AI) have blanket permission to use these references. Yes, even for work you're going to sell.

All other usage/reproduction requires permission, but assume I'm friendly and please do ask! That's educators, researchers, the media, people who need images for a school presentation, etc. This is just to retain copyright/control in case they're scraped/reused unethically - it doesn't meant I don't want folk to have access! So please do reach out via the contact form on the repository website, I don't bite and I'm most likely going to say yes.

Please don't repost the repository photos to your own blogs: I've created @animalphotorefs as a dedicated blog to share photos from the site, and of course I'll reblog a lot of it here! That again just helps with retaining copyright and sourcing of the images. If you really want to repost some for a specific purpose, please just ask me first!

Also, folks, this project has no funding. It's just me and my camera.

I really can't take the time or energy to sell the books, and haven't any interest in doing so, especially since many were given to me for review purposes. I'd feel bad about that.
