OJT EATS | Applebee's
It was closed for a while for refurbishment but in recent months, Applebee's, a Borough institution for seafood has reopened. It was predictably busy in the period right after it reopened but we were able to get ourselves a table recently so headed on down.
We started off with a plate of taramasalata with crisps. We weren't expecting it to come on a plate if we were to be honest but other than the very simple presentation, the taramasala itself was delicious and the crisps were pretty great too.
We then had a plate of mussels in a delicious white wine sauce. You can see how bright and plump the mussels were and we can't overstate quite how moreish that sauce was.
The brown crab rarebit with samphire. The bread was really good quality and the topping was this incredibly rich thick cheesey, crabby sauce. Definitely worth ordering!
These grilled wild prawns were huge! Brushed with a herby butter with chilli and garlic, this is shellfish as it is meant to be done! With the burnt lemon, this was a winner.
We find it very hard to resist a seafood platter. Super fresh, tasty oysters a squid salad, prawn cocktail and some scallops all hit the spot perfectly.
Finally, we ordered the special which was an aged turbot. We've not had a lot of aged fish before but this was great. The flavour tasted slightly more concentrated than usual and the flesh felt a little bit firmer; both really nice. The caper and butter sauce balanced each other really well and this was 100% something we'd order again.
This place has a pretty stellar pedigree and it definitely lives up to it. The food was delicious and the service was super friendly. Borough Market has a bunch of really great restaurants nowadays but this place easily holds its own against any of them!
