A/N: It has been approximately 75 years since I have posted this and for that I apologize! But I recently read through this again and since I have it completely outlined figured it was a good time to get back into the swing of things with it! You checked over your appearance in the mirror for what felt like the thousandth time as you waited for Misha to pick you up. You weren’t even sure why you were so nervous, it wasn’t like you’d never spent time with Misha alone before. Still, you found yourself second guessing your outfit choice. You didn’t have a chance to dwell on it, however, because there was a knock on your door. Letting out a deep breath you gave yourself another once over and went to answer the door.
Misha was standing there, a bouquet of flowers in his hand, grinning. You couldn’t stop the smile from spreading across your face as you took the flowers from him and stepped aside to let him into the apartment.
“You look incredible,” he said, kissing you softly.
You thanked him, unable to stop the blush from creeping up your cheeks, and went to search for a vase for the flowers. Once you found a vase, filled it and placed the flowers inside you set the vase down on the kitchen table.
“Ready to go?” he asked.
“More than ready,” you nodded. “Just let me get my jacket.”
You went to get your jacket and purse before following Misha out of the apartment and down to his car. The butterflies in your stomach were overwhelming and you couldn’t understand why you were feeling so giddy. It was just dinner but by the time you reached the restaurant you realized the butterflies were because this was the first time you were actually out with him in public, on a real date, and the realization of that had finally sunk in.
Misha found parking easily and went around to open the car door for you. You smiled up at him and took his hand, lacing your fingers with his, as you walked into the beautiful waterfront restaurant. You were seated quickly, outside with a view of the harbor, and immediately began looking over the menu. Once your orders were placed the conversation between you flowed easily and any nerves you had about the date had completely disappeared.
Dinner went quicker than you would have liked and you were more than pleased that Misha had suggested getting ice cream for dessert and taking a walk by the harbor. You agreed enthusiastically and once the bill was paid walked over to the ice cream shop that was only a few doors down.
“Nervous about going back to work?” Misha asked as you walked by the harbor.
“Yes and no,” you shrugged. “I feel like I forgot everything even though I spent all of my time off reading through my old textbooks. It feels like my very first day all over again.”
“You’re gonna be fine,” he assured you. “It’s like riding a bike and besides, you’re one of the best interns we’ve got you’ll get back into the swing of things easily and I’ll be there to help.”
“Assuming I’m still on your service,” you chuckled.
“I’ll request you,” he smirked.
You smiled at him and finished off the rest of your ice cream before following him back to his car.
*
“Thank you for tonight, Misha, it was an absolutely perfect first date,” you said as you reached your apartment door.
“It really was,” he replied, leaning in to kiss you.
You lingered against his lips for a few extra seconds and smiled. “Want to come in?”
“I don’t want to keep you up before your first day back,” he replied.
“You won’t,” you smirked. “I promise.”
“Well, if you insist,” He smiled and leaned forward to kiss you once again before following you into the apartment.
*
“Misha,” you said, shaking him gently. “You’ve gotta get up. I am dangerously close to being late for pre-rounds.”
“Five more minutes,” he groaned and rolled back over.
You chuckled and climbed out of bed and went to get in the shower. By the time you returned to your bedroom to get dressed Misha was just getting out of bed.
“We really need to get better about actually waking up on time when we spend the night together,” Misha chuckled as he pulled on his pants.
“Yeah, I’m definitely gonna agree with that,” you replied as you got dressed. “We have to start setting our alarms earlier or something.”
Misha nodded in agreement, pulling his shirt over his head, before crossing the room to pull you into his arms. You smiled at him and snaked your arms around his neck as he leaned down to kiss you.
“We’ve really gotta go,” you said, kissing him again. “Gen will kill me if I’m late after I made her fast track all of my tests so I could get back to work.”
“Fine, we can go,” he said, kissing you once more. “Dinner tonight? I’ll cook.”
“Sounds good,” you replied, moving out of his embrace.
He followed you out of the bedroom and once you both collected your things he followed you out to the parking garage.
*
“Good to have you back, Dr. Y/L/N,” Genevieve smiled as she walked into the locker room.
“Good to be back,” you smiled.
Genevieve assigned all of the interns and had shocked both you and Selene when she put you on Jensen’s service and Selene on Misha’s. You hung back as everyone else left the room, wanting to talk to Genevieve about the sudden change.
“You really think I’m gonna put you on his service now that the two of you are officially a thing? Fat chance. The two of you will get absolutely no work done.” she said and you went to protest but she held a hand up to stop you. “Don’t argue. I saw the two of you walking in this morning. Until you get out of this little honeymoon phase I’m not putting you on his service. The last thing I need is you two stealing off to an on call room on your downtime.”
“We wouldn’t --”
Genevieve just laughed. “You would. Just go help Jensen out. I need to keep him and Selene apart too.”
You nodded, realizing that if you even attempted to protest some more you would just get lectured again and you really didn’t want to be causing any trouble on your first day back, not after everything Genevieve had done for you. Still, you wondered how Misha would react to this, especially after your conversation from the night before. You shrugged it off, knowing that dwelling on it wouldn’t change the situation, and went to find Jensen, more than ready to jump back into your work and eager to get started.

A/N: Holy crap has it been AGES since I’ve posted this, but I caught up on Grey’s Anatomy and it got me in the zone so here is part 8! Huge thanks to Nicole (@iwantthedean) for help with all the medical stuff. Title comes from As Lover’s Go by Dashboard Confessional. If you’d like to be tagged let me know! Hope you guys like it! Anyway, feedback for this is awesome! :)
Your eyes fluttered open, your hand still in Misha’s, as Jensen, Genevieve and Rob flitted around you -- checking just about everything. As you tried to focus all you could hear was Selene yelling at the nurses to let her through. You couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle, which startled all of your doctors, as Selene rushed to your side.
“You’re awake,” she said, unshed tears in her eyes, “I’m so glad you’re awake.”
She leaned in to hug you, and you hugged her in return -- one armed -- unwilling to let go of Misha’s hand.
Through all of the hustle and bustle Misha stayed silent and calm, not wanting to get in anyone’s way. He held your hand as you squeezed it whenever any check the others made hurt and didn’t let go as your well wishers came through to hug you and say how happy they were that you were finally awake. He would have left if he thought you wanted him to, but the grip on his hand told him otherwise, so he stayed put.
It was a few hours before you and Misha were alone in the room.
“Thank you,” you said, turning to look at him for the first time since you’d woken up.
You finally had the chance to take a good look at him. There were bags under his normally bright blue eyes, and he looked like he hadn’t slept in days. In fact, you weren’t sure he’d even left the hospital recently to go home and shower and change.
“For what?”
“Being here when I woke up,” you smiled, “ for everything.”
Misha smiled back, even though he was unsure of exactly what you meant when you said ‘everything’. He’d hoped that you’d heard him but he didn’t want to jump the gun and make an assumption, so he kept those thoughts to himself.
“Of course,” he replied, squeezing your hand.
Noticing the look of distress on his face you gave him a reassuring smile. “Go home, Mish. Take a shower and get some sleep. I’ll still be here tomorrow.”
Misha seemed to think for a moment before nodding and standing from his chair. “If you need me…”
“I have your number,” you assured, “but I’ll be fine. I’ve got Selene, and Jay and Gen. Not to mention the countless other doctors and nurses. I’ll be fine.”
“If you’re sure,” he said, still maintaining a firm grip on your hand.
“I’m sure,” you reiterated, squeezing his hand once more.
Misha leaned forward and placed a kiss on your forehead before assuring you that he would keep his phone on. You watched him walk out of the room before paging the nurses station for more medication. Once the nurse walked in you asked her to page Selene and waited patiently for your best friend once the nurse administered your medication.
Selene walked into your room not much later, unshed tears still shining in her eyes, and took a seat in the chair next to your bed.
“You scared the shit out of me,” Selene sighed, “don’t ever do that again.”
“I promise I will try my best,” you said, “have they said anything about me getting out of here?”
“Y/N/N,” Selene sighed, “don’t rush this...you need to recover.”
“I know, but I want to go home,” you replied, “I love this place but only when I’m seeing the inside of an OR.”
Selene nodded, knowing exactly what you meant. She promised you that she would find Genevive, Jensen and Rob to get you cleared to go home. After knowing that you would hopefully be going home soon you made Selene fill you in on what had been happening around the hospital while you were out.
Once she covered everything she thought you’d want to know, including the escalation of her relationship with Jensen, she called your doctors in just as she had promised.
It had taken a few hours but ultimately you were given the okay to go home. Selene had assured Gen, Rob, and Jensen that she would stay with you while you recovered and helped you out of the hospital gown and into some fresh clothes that she had gotten for you days before. A few hours later she was helping you into her car and leading you back to your apartment.
After a few weeks at home you were going stir crazy. You didn’t want to be stuck at home anymore. You wanted to be back in the hospital, checking on patients and scrubbing in on surgeries. You wanted to be back into the thick of things. You’d been cleared to do pretty much everything but you still hadn’t been cleared to be back at work, but that didn’t stop you. One morning when you’d finally had enough you donned your scrubs and made your way into work.
As you stood with the rest of the interns, waiting for your assignment, you caught Genevive’s eye. She passed over you but as soon as she finished giving everyone their assignments she held you back.
“You know you’re not cleared to be back at work, Y/N/N,” she sighed, “you need more tests. We need to know you’re back at one-hundred-percent. I want you here, I really do, you’re one of our best...but you need to go home. I’m not just saying this as your superior but as your friend. I don’t want to cause any further damage, and I don’t want you to be doing this until you’re ready.”
“Gen, I’m ready,” you stated, “I can’t sit at home anymore. I need to be back here. I need to be back into the the thick of things.”
“And I will gladly do that for you, as soon as we get some more tests done.”
“Then clear the books. Test me now. I can’t go back home, Gen. I can’t.”
She considered you for a minute before nodding and pulling her phone out of her labcoat. Within a few minutes Genevive had secured everything needing for your testing. Within minutes you were taken for an MRI. Once that was clear you were sent for a CT, EKG and EEG. After all of those tests showed that you were fine you were sitting in a room with Genevive getting blood drawn for blood work.
“Gen, this is really excessive,” you pointed out, “every single test says I’m fine. This blood work really isn’t worth it.”
“I know you think that, but we need to cover all of our bases, Y/N/N,” she sighed, “we just want to make sure you’re ok.”
You nodded, knowing she had your best interest in mind. After a few more hours the blood work came back and it was blatantly clear that there was nothing holding you back from going back to work.
“You’re good,” Gen smiled, “just like I knew you would be. So tomorrow I expect you here, bright and early.”
You smiled at her and thanked her for everything she had done for you before promising her that you would go straight home and spend the rest of the day resting. She went off to check on her patients and you set off to find Misha. You hadn’t seen him since the day you woke up and he’d been ignoring your texts and calls. You scoured the pediatrics wing and the ORs for him and couldn’t find him anywhere and without having your pager on you, there was no way for you to find him easily.
You had completely given up and got into the elevator to head back down to the main floor to go home when the elevator stopped. The door opened and Misha walked in, looking down at a chart in his hand.
“Hey stranger,” you said, and he looked up at you -- startled.
“Hey,” he replied, giving you a small smile, “glad to see you’re back at work.”
“Not today,” you replied, “they had to run tests to clear me but I’ll be back tomorrow.”
He nodded and went back to his chart. You were confused. After everything he’d said to you while you were out you were sure there was more to say than what had been said. Growing frustrated you hit the stop button on the elevator. As it halted to a stop, Misha looked at you surprised.
“I heard everything,” you stated simply, “every single thing that was said to me while I was out. I heard all about Selene sleeping with Jensen and Gen worrying about me waking up but most importantly I heard what you said about how you feel about me.”
Misha looked at you completely stunned. He had hoped you hadn’t heard his confession, it would make his life a hell of a lot easier.
“I love you too, Misha,” you stated, “I’ve loved you for a while and it took this accident for me to realize it too. All that was going through my mind while everything was happening was that I hoped that I would wake up and make it back to you. You are everything I’ve ever wanted and more and I was scared to admit it before. I hate that it took this happening for me to come to my senses but it is what it is. I love you Misha Collins and I don’t care who knows it.”
Misha didn’t even think. He walked toward you and pulled you into his arms before placing an earnest kiss on your lips. When you broke apart you smiled at him as he pressed the button to get the elevator moving again.
“I hope you’re not busy tonight,” he said.
You looked at him perplexed.
“I owe you a date Y/N,” he stated, “a real one. So please tell me you’re free around eight.”
“I am,” you grinned.
“I’ll pick you up then,” he smiled as the elevator reached the appropriate floor.
He leaned in to kiss you once again before the elevator doors opened and you watched him walk away, more than excited about what the night had in store for you.

Over the past few months you and Misha had been keeping your, entirely sexual, relationship a secret from just about everyone -- Selene and Jensen being the only exceptions. You usually met in the on call room but occasionally you'd go to his apartment. That particular morning was one of the times you were there.
"I have to go," you laughed between kisses.
"Come on, just stay for five more minutes," Misha pleaded, kissing you again.
You were standing right in front of the front door trying to leave, but it was almost pointless.
"If I don't leave now I won't be able to get home and get ready," you said putting your hand on his chest, pushing him back a little.
"Skip the shower," he smirked, kissing your neck.
"Do you want to explain to Gen why I'm late for rounds...again," you laughed.
He sighed and finally released you.
"Fair enough," he nodded, "I'll see you at work then."
He kissed you one last time and you left the apartment. You couldn't stop grinning as you climbed into your car. Your smile fell, however, when you noticed the time. If you didn't get home quickly you would be late for sure. You pulled out of your parking space and practically sped to your apartment.
You were just around the corner, only one traffic light between you and your apartment building. As soon as the light turned green you put your foot to the gas pedal, anxious to get home. As soon as your car made it to the middle of the intersection you felt something slam into the driver side of your car and everything went black.
Misha was walking toward the elevator when Selene practically accosted him.
“Did Y/N stay at your place last night?” she whispered.
He didn’t answer her immediately, instead he stood there completely silent until the elevator doors opened. Once they were both alone inside the elevator Selene repeated her question.
“Yeah, why?” he asked.
“Because she didn’t show up for rounds,” she said, “I’m running out of excuses to cover for her. I thought you two were gonna make sure you both made it to work on time from now on.”
“She left with enough time to go home before work,” he said, concerned, “maybe she just took too long in the shower or something.”
“You know her, Misha,” she sighed, “if she knew she was going to be late she would have taken a thirty second shower.”
He had to admit that Selene was right. Y/N was only ever late if he was the reason behind it and even then she tried her hardest to be on time if she could help it. Misha felt his stomach drop. Something wasn’t right and he knew it. Once they reached the pediatrics ward he pulled out his phone and called her before going to check on his patients.
“Y/N/N, it’s me,” he said when he’d gotten your voicemail, “I don’t know why you’re not at work yet but it’s starting to worry me. It’s worrying Selene too. Call one of us when you get a chance, ok?”
He hung up the phone and headed toward one of his patients’ rooms. He was about to enter the room when his pager going off stopped him short. Without a second thought he was getting back on the elevator heading for the ER.
“What’s going on?” Misha asked, joining Selene and Jensen at the ambulance bay.
“MVC,” Selene answered. “Female patient, multiple system trauma.”
Misha frowned. “Pediatric patient?”
Selene frowned; Jensen wasn’t sure either. Before too long, the ambulance came rushing into the unloading area, and the driving paramedic came around to help unload the patient.
“Think it’s one of yours,” the paramedic announced to Dr. Mark Sheppard, the head of trauma surgery. “Female, approximately twenty-eight years old. Truck blindsided her at an intersection. GCS was twelve in the field, patient has since lost consciousness. She’s got obvious rib deformities, rigid abdomen, unequal pupils.”
“Let’s get her on the table,” Dr. Sheppard instructed. “On my count. One, two, three.”
The patient was moved onto the examination table, and a flurry of actions proceeded. A nurse started an IV, Selene called for x-ray and attached the patient to a heart monitor.
Misha stood back and watched, still unsure why he had been paged. Genevieve appeared to assess the patient’s abdomen, and Misha asked her why he was paged.
Genevieve frowned. “This is your intern, Dr. Collins. I thought you’d want to be aware that she was here. Somebody give her a shot of proactive antibiotics, please.”
Misha’s and Selene’s eyes met over the patient’s body and they finally realized it was Y/N on the table. Her face and hair were a bloody mess, leaving her temporarily unrecognizable until they stopped to actually see who was being worked on.
Misha rushed for Y/N’s side, but Selene stood in front of him. “I may be smaller than you, Dr. Collins, but I can hold you back.” She lowered her voice. “You cannot help her right now, Misha. Let them work.”
“Loading penicillin on board,” another intern announced, shooting a syringe of the liquid into Y/N’s IV.
In the same second that Selene’s eyes went wide and she turned quickly, Y/N’s respirations became heavily labored and her heart rate shot up on the monitor.
“What the hell happened?” Dr. Sheppard demanded.
“She’s in anaphylaxis,” Selene bit out, already loading a vial of epinephrine into a syringe. “If dumbass here would have bothered to check her allergies, he would have known she was allergic to penicillin. Move!”
No longer concerned with Misha, Selene pushed the epinephrine into Y/N’s IV and stood by while her symptoms began to subside. Jensen intubated the young woman, and, once she was stable, directed Selene to take her to CT and MRI.
“You don’t let anyone else load meds without checking with you first,” Misha ordered, in the most stern, professional voice he could muster.
Several people helped Selene push the gurney out of the room and down to imaging, while Misha stood back, trying to process what this could possibly mean for Y/N, for him -- and for them together.
Misha had never been more thankful and annoyed by the fact that he didn’t have any surgeries scheduled for that day. On the one hand not having surgery meant that he would be free the second Y/N came out of surgery. On the other hand that meant that he had nothing to occupy his mind or his time, nothing to distract him and keep him from worrying.
Misha made his rounds and checked on his patients, hoping that it would take his mind off of everything going on with Y/N -- it didn’t. No one would give him any information about how she was doing and it was starting to frustrate him. Eventually he decided enough was enough and went to find Selene.
He located her in the cafeteria and made a beeline for her. Thankfully she was sitting alone and he pulled up a chair and sat down across from her.
“Any news?” he asked.
“Misha,” she sighed.
“Don’t, Dr. Hill,” he said, “no one is telling me anything. I need to know how she’s doing.”
“Why do you care, Dr. Collins?” she said, her tone harsh, “I thought it was only about the sex for you? At least that’s what Y/N told me you said.”
“Selene,” he sighed, running his hands through his hair.
“No,” Selene interrupted. “You don't get to use the one thing she has dreamed of her entire life -- becoming a peds surgeon -- to make sure you're getting a little action from the fresh new intern, then decide you care when she is in real trouble. Y/N would be happy you're at least pretending to care, but she’s my friend, so I'll have the hard conversation for her. Decide what you want, Misha, and pray like hell it isn't too late for you to tell her whatever you decide.”
With that she stood from the table, picked up her tray, and walked away from him. He knew she had a point. He needed to make a decision but first he needed to know that she was ok, at least for the time being. With a sigh he stood from the table and went to find Jensen, hoping that he had some kind of information for him.

“Where the hell did you go last night?” Selene asked when she walked into the locker room the next morning.
“Home,” you said simply.
“Home? Really?” she questioned, “If you went home then why didn’t you answer your phone?”
“Because I took a shower and went to sleep,” you stated.
You were more than thankful that you were already in your scrubs and she hadn’t seen that you’d come in wearing the clothes you were wearing the day before. She didn’t need to know that you’d left the bar with Misha last night and she really didn’t need to know that you didn’t have time to go home and change before coming to work this morning.
She didn’t have time to answer you as Genevieve walked into the locker room to tell everyone they were late for rounds. You didn’t even give Selene another glance as you walked out of the locker room, pulling your hair up into a ponytail. You didn’t have time to shower which meant that you didn’t have time to do your hair or makeup. You knew the ponytail would suffice for the day and you were hoping to God that you’d managed to clean up any smudged makeup on your face.
The ringing of an alarm clock had your eyes springing open. It took you a few seconds to figure out where you were. Once you realized you’d woken up in your attending’s bed, naked, you started to panic. You were on your side, facing the windows, and you rolled onto your back slowly -- almost nervous to see Misha still sleeping next to you.
The entire time you were doing your rounds you were praying Genevieve wouldn’t put you in Misha’s service again that day. The morning in his apartment was awkward enough, you didn’t need to the rest of your day to be awkward too. You thought you were in the clear when it was just down to you and Selene being assigned and you’d hoped that maybe she’d switch it up -- put you on Jensen’s service instead -- but she didn’t.
“Dr. Y/L/N, you’re with Dr. Collins,” she stated.
You stopped yourself from rolling your eyes as you nodded at her. You let out a sigh, hoping that maybe he would pretend like it didn’t happen, and headed for the elevator.
Your head was pounding and moving didn’t help that. You let out a sigh of relief when you noticed the bed was empty next to you. You thought that maybe he’d already left for the hospital but then you finally registered the sound of running water just off the bedroom. It became apparent to you that he was in the shower and before you had time to think you heard the water shut off.
He walked out of the bathroom in nothing but a towel and you scrambled to cover yourself with the sheet, not like it mattered -- he’d clearly already seen you naked.
When you reached the pediatrics ward it wasn’t hard to locate Misha. He was talking to the parents of one of his patients and you stepped into the room. He nodded at you, handed you the patient’s chart and continued talking to the parents. As soon as he was finished he motioned for you to follow him. You walked down the hallway with him, trying to figure out how he was handling this.
“You were late,” he pointed out.
“I know,” you said clearing your throat, “rounds got started late and Dr. Padalecki couldn’t decide where she wanted to put everyone and --”
“It’s partially my fault,” he smirked.
“Well, yeah,” you chuckled, “that too.”
He didn’t seem fazed by the fact that you were trying to cover yourself up as he walked toward his dresser and pulled out a pair of boxers. You were barely concentrating on that, though, all you could seem to focus on were the droplets of water that were falling from his hair and rolling down his back between his shoulder blades.
“I made a pot of coffee if you want some,” he said, locking eyes with you in the mirror, forcing you to focus.
“Oh, uh, thanks,” you said, giving him a small smile.
He walked back into the bathroom and you took a deep breath.
“What’s on your chest?” Selene asked when you sat down with her for lunch in the cafeteria.
“Nothing,” you said, completely unaware of the fact that there was anything on your chest.
“That’s not nothing,” she said, grinning, “oh. My God. That’s a hickey!”
“What?” you said, your eyes going wide.
You immediately looked down and pulled your scrub top down a little. Sure enough there was a hickey. It was on your collarbone, in a spot where just a small portion of it was sticking out from beneath your scrub top. You hadn’t even noticed it and you doubted anyone else did either, but this was Selene. You had given her zero details of your night and because of that she was looking for literally anything to get you to tell her.
“Ok, now that I know you weren’t alone last night you need to tell me what happened,” she smirked, “otherwise you’ll be lying to me twice today.”
You sighed and shook your head. You were determined for absolutely no one to find out about what happened last night. You weren’t even sure if sleeping with an attending could get you kicked out of the program or not and you weren’t going to chance it.
“Fine,” Selene huffed, “if you won’t tell me then you don’t get the juicy details of my evening after you left.”
You had to admit that was tempting, but you kept your mouth shut. Selene would cave and tell you before the day was over anyway so there was no point in spilling your secret.
You got dressed quickly, in your clothes from the day before, and just as you were about to walk out of the bedroom Misha emerged from the bathroom. He was fully dressed now, in jeans and a white button down shirt. Memories of the night before flooded your mind and you suddenly had the urge to rip that shirt right off him.
You pushed that thought from your mind and went to walk out of the room. Everything changed though, when you caught his eye and he smiled at you. Before you knew what was happening your lips were on his and you were both hastily undressing each other.
Both you and Misha managed to keep everything strictly professional throughout the rest of your shift and you were grateful for that. That didn’t mean that you didn’t catch him staring at you any chance he got, though, and that in itself had your cheeks burning red for most of the day.
By the time your shift was over and you’d made it to the locker room to change you were more than happy to be heading home. You were exhausted and you wanted to get out of there before Selene could hound you for more information about your night. You weren’t so lucky. Selene made her way into the locker room and started bombarding you with questions.
You were sweaty and exhausted, all you really wanted to do was take a shower and go back to bed. One look at the clock on Misha’s bedside table ruined that for you. You were more than late for rounds and therefore had to get to work as soon as possible. Misha seemed to realize what time it was as well because you were both throwing your clothes on as quickly as you had shed them.
You followed him out of the apartment, not saying a single word, the coffee he’d made sitting on the counter completely untouched.
“I’m not telling you anything,” you laughed, “why do you want to know anyway?”
“Because,” she whispered, “I saw you leave with Dr. Collins and I want to know what happened.”
Your eyes went wide. If she’d known all along why didn’t she just come out and say it at the beginning? You didn’t have time to respond to her, however, due to your pager going off. It was from Misha and you couldn’t help the smile spreading across your lips.
“Who is it?” she asked.
“Uh...no one,” you said, clearing your throat, “don’t worry about it.”
“it’s him isn’t it?” she grinned, “It’s definitely him. Look at your face.”
You ignored her as you exited the locker room to find Misha. You checked the pediatrics ward but he wasn’t there. You weren’t sure where else to look and he hadn’t paged you again so you started to head back to the locker room, hoping you’d run into him along the way.
As you were passing the on call rooms one of the doors opened and someone pulled you inside. It only took you a few seconds to realize it was Misha and once you did you could barely control yourself. He locked the door behind you before grabbing your face to kiss you. He backed you up against the door and it didn’t take long before you were shedding your clothes for the second time that day.

A/N: Because I couldn’t focus yesterday you guys are getting part 4 early as well! Part five will not be released until I have written through part 13, just to give myself some time to catch up. Title comes from Alone Together by Fall Out Boy. Huge thanks to Nicole (@iwantthedean) for help with the medical stuff. If you’d like to be tagged let me know! Hope you guys like it! Anyway, feedback for this is awesome! :)
The next morning when you walked into work it was like you were a brand new person. You felt like you were finally ok with working in the hospital now that it seemed you weren’t going to be attacked or ostracized by your attendings. The shitty part was that you still couldn’t work with Selene but that was just a small bump in the road.
The only other thing setting you back was being in Misha’s service. With everything that had happened between the two of you over the past few days -- the constant back and forth -- you were more than uncomfortable. It’s not that you were uncomfortable around him, per se, you just weren’t sure how to read him. You weren’t sure if you were going to get the kind, supportive Dr. Collins or the harsh, all business Dr. Collins and that kept you on your toes.
As you went through rounds you were hoping that Dr. Padalecki wouldn’t place you in Misha’s service again but your hopes were dashed as soon as rounds were finished. She was delegating the services and put Selene with Jensen and you with Misha just as she had the day before. You hid your apprehension well and after nodding at Genevieve went to find Misha in the ER.
“Dr. Collins again, huh?” Selene asked as the pair walked toward the elevators.
“Unfortunately,” you groaned.
“Really, ladies?” Genevieve said from behind them, “Dr. Hill, I know for a fact you’re well aware that Dr. Ackles’ patient is on this floor.”
Selene nodded and wished you luck on dealing with Dr. Collins for another day as she walked down the hall. You sighed and walked onto the elevator. You mentally prepared yourself for dealing with a day in the ER while simultaneously praying it was busy so your contact with Misha would be minimal. As soon as you set foot in the ER it was apparent your prayers had been answered. It was so crowded you knew you would barely have time to think, let alone have time to talk to Misha.
You immediately kicked yourself into high gear. You located Misha quickly across the room. As soon as you checked in he was directing you toward the patients that needed the most attention. Over the next few hours you worked your ass off, doing every single thing right. You wanted to keep yourself in Misha’s good graces and you hated yourself for even caring about that, but in that moment it didn’t matter. All that mattered were the patients.
By the time the ER was almost empty you were exhausted. You were going to take a break when a little boy, no more that 6, was being rushed in by his mother. You decided you would help out with this patient before you took your lunch.
According to the boy’s mother he was complaining about trouble breathing and severe chest pain. She explained that he was diagnosed with asthma two years prior and the only reason she’d brought him to the ER was because his inhaler didn’t seem to be working. After checking him over Dr. Collins didn’t look convinced that asthma was the problem.
“Dr. Y/L/N, order him a PET scan,” Dr. Collins said and you nodded.
It became apparent from the scans Misha ordered that the little boy, who’s name you learned was James Percy, had a pretty sizeable tumor on his lung. He called Geneveive’s husband, Dr. Jared Padalecki, for a consult and within hours James was being wheeled into surgery.
“Do you think you can get the whole tumor?” you asked Dr. Padalecki.
Jared looked into the OR at the small boy laying on the table. “I'm going to do my best. The cancer is fairly advanced, but we won't truly know how advanced until we’re in there.”
With his words in mind, you frowned going into the OR. It was your first indication that the prognosis for James was less than optimistic; should you have known that as a first year? You weren't entirely sure, but you found yourself wishing Misha had been more clear.
With his chest opened on the table, it became apparent that the PET scan had not adequately shown James’s tumor. It was already filtering into the lining of his lung, making removing the tumor in its entirety impossible.
“We’ll remove as much as we can,” Jared decided. “He’ll need chemo and radiation, but I don't guess he’s going to make it too much longer.”
You were instantly furious, with both the universe and Misha. How could this happen to such a young, sweet boy? And how could Misha not make sure you were prepared to handle the death of a small child?
Your angry thoughts were interrupted by alarms going off on the monitor, and you registered that James’s chest cavity was filling with blood.
“What the hell happened!” Misha demanded.
“Tumor’s wrapped around the pulmonary artery - something gave when we began resecting the mass,” Jared replied calmly. “Dr. Y/L/N, hand off the retractor and help us suction this blood, please.”
You did as you were told, but James flatlined soon after you began to help suction. You were scooping clots with your hands when Misha and Jared exchanged a sad look and told you to stop.
“Time of death, 13:42,” Misha said before one of the nurses turned off the monitor.
As everyone filtered out of the room, you stood and stared down at the mess before you. You were sad and angry, and though you felt the urgent need to escape, you felt rooted to the spot.
By the time you were back in the locker room to change out of your scrubs you had a lot on your mind. You knew death was inevitable in your line of work but you weren’t sure you would ever be prepared to lose a child again, especially not on the table like that. Selene walked into the room just as you were lacing up your sneakers. She gave you a small smile and you told her you were heading to the bar.
She refused to let you go alone and the two of you headed down the street together. Once you were seated at the bar, Selene at your side, you ordered yourself a drink. You weren’t sitting there for long before Selene excused herself abruptly. Confused, you looked to your other side and saw Dr. Collins sitting next to you.
“Dr. Collins,” you said nodding at him.
“We’re not at the hospital, Y/N,” he sighed, “you can call me Misha.”
“Oh, ok,” you smiled, taken aback by the fact that he knew your first name.
He motioned for the bartender and ordered you each a drink. Once the drink was placed in front of you, he turned on the barstool to face you fully.
“I know it’s stressful,” he said, “it never gets any easier when a child dies on the table. He had a small chance of survival, it was better that we tried our best to save him then not give him any chance at all.”
All you could do was nod. You finished off your drink and grabbed your coat before paying your tab. You weren’t sure why but you were furious with him. No, scratch that, you knew exactly why you were furious with him. He had no problem letting you on a case where there was no positive outcome but not on a case where the child survived, that wasn’t allowed.
You had just about reached your car when you felt someone grab your arm. You turned on the spot and came face to face with Misha.
“You’ve got a really bad habit of doing that,” he laughed.
“Doing what?” you questioned.
“Storming off in the middle of a conversation,” he pointed out, “last time it was because I wouldn’t let you on my case. What is it this time?”
“You really want to know?” You asked.
“I do,” he nodded.
“I’m not allowed on a case with a patient who was definitely going to survive but the second a case comes in where there’s no chance in hell the kid is gonna live it’s ok for me to be on that?” you sighed, “I just don’t get it. I know I messed up my first day in surgery but I just don’t think that’s a reason to keep me off of other cases, it’s ridiculous --”
Misha cut you off by cupping your face and giving you a soft, quick kiss. All words were lost on you, you were taken completely off guard and all you were sure of in that moment was that you wanted to kiss him again.
“We could go to my place and talk about it,” he suggested, “if you want.”
Still unable to find your words you nodded. The next thing you knew you were climbing into your car and following him to his apartment building.

A/N: My writing schedule got completely thrown off and due to that you guys are getting part 3 early! I am still so overwhelmed by all the positive feedback I’m getting from this. I’m so glad you all like it. Title comes from Emergency by Paramore. Huge thanks to Nicole (@iwantthedean) for help with the medical stuff. If you’d like to be tagged let me know! As you walked into the hospital the next morning you were more than determined to make that day better than the previous two. Remembering that you and Selene were being forced to work on separate services put a slight damper on your mood but you decided not to let it bother you. After rounds Dr. Padalecki put you in Dr. Collins’ service, yet again, and you forced yourself not to groan and roll your eyes.
The last thing you wanted was to be put in his service yet again. Unfortunately there was nothing you could do about it. Selene was placed with Dr. Ackles and the pair went their separate ways to check on their patients.
“Amanda Presley, eight year old female with mitral valve regurgitation. She is here for a valve replacement after presenting with fatigue, palpitations, and chronic cough. We are optimistic that these symptoms will resolve after the valve is replaced,” you summed up.
“She’s scheduled for surgery later today,” Dr. Collins added, addressing the other interns, “Dr. Ackles will be performing the surgery.”
The interns were all scribbling furiously in notebooks, trying to take down as much information as they could while Dr. Collins continued to talk. You watched as he explained to the patient and her parents what the surgery would entail and it amazed you that one person could be so kind and gentle with his patients and their families but so rude and harsh to his interns.
You pushed the thoughts from your mind as he finished his conversation with Amanda’s parents and walked with the rest of the interns out of the room. Everyone dispersed to take care of running labs and you were about to do the same when Dr. Collins stopped you.
“You’re off the case,” he stated once he was sure the other interns were all gone.
“I’m sorry? What?” you questioned, your blood beginning to boil.
It was like he had something against you. One screw up on your first day and all of a sudden it was like you were blacklisted. The entire point of being an intern was to learn and now you were being robbed of that chance.
“Do you need your hearing checked?” he asked, an amused smirk on his face, “I’m sure you heard me, Dr. Y/L/N. You’re off the case.”
“Why?” you asked, knowing he didn’t have to give you an answer.
“Dr. Hill is on Dr. Ackles’ service,” he stated, “and from “what I’ve heard the two of you have been split up so you can get your shit together. I’m not going to undermine Dr. Padalecki’s decision to keep the two of you apart.”
The smug look on his face made you want to punch him. You obviously knew you couldn’t do that, however. With your hands balled into fists at your sides your turned on your heel and stormed off. You needed to get as far away from him as possible if you were going to collect yourself enough to get through your shift.
It astounded you how angry the man could make you, but as he was an attending, you figured that was something you would just have to reconcile yourself to. You would just have to find a way to deal with the back and forth nature of his personality whether you liked it or not. Perhaps that's what surprised you so much that when he followed you into the stairwell and grabbed you by the arm, you jumped back a bit.
“Do you just follow all of your interns around?” you spat at him.
You thought you’d managed to get at least most of your anger out as you walked toward the stairwell but seeing his face just brought it all surging forward. He laughed at your statement, taking you by surprise.
“Clearly you have some sort of issue with the decision of your attending physician, Dr. Y/L/N,” Misha replied, somewhere between pissed off and amused. “Might I suggest you work that out on your own time, and in a more professional manner?”
“Professional?” you sputtered out. “I'm perfectly capable of being professional, Dr. Collins, when my attending physician isn't being a self-righteous ass! I'm an intern, I get that, but I'm not sure what in the hell I did to deserve such horrible treatment from you. Yes, I froze in the OR under a tremendous amount of pressure on my first day, having never operated on a live body before. I don't think that warrants being treated like an idiot!”
“Self-righteous ass, that’s a new one,” he chuckled, “and you’re right, you froze, forgive me for not wanting that to happen again, especially on a case as serious as this. It doesn’t make you an idiot, I’m just trying to cover my ass. Last thing I want is a kid dying on the table because you’re not on top of your game. Don’t take it personally, Dr. Y/L/N, people get kicked off of cases all the time.”
Despite still being furious with him you bit your tongue, deciding you had expelled enough of your energy on fighting with him today, and nodded.
“Are you going to reassign me then?” you asked, as politely as possible, “or should I go see Dr. Padalecki about that?”
“Talk to Dr. Padalecki,” he answered before turning around and walking out of the stairwell.
You let out a frustrated groan and ran your fingers through your hair as you jogged up the stairs, intent on finding Genevieve as quickly as possible. She wasn’t hard to locate and once you found her and explained your situation to her she sighed.
“I’m not reassigning you,” she stated, “he may not want you in his OR but I’ve got nowhere else to put you so you’re stuck with him.”
“But he kicked me off the case,” you pointed out.
“He did,” she nodded, “but I’m reinstating you. Just stay out of the OR and you’ll be fine. Monitor his pre- and post-op patients, stay on your best behavior.”
You sighed and made your way back to the pediatrics ward. If Misha caught you around there and gave you shit for it you would just have to explain to him that Genevieve had nowhere else to put you and hope for the best.
After you checked on all of Misha’s pre- and post-op patients you stood at the nurses’ station talking with one of the nurses. You was about to leave and take your lunch when all the alarms in Amanda’s room started going off. Without even thinking you told the nurse to page Dr. Collins and Dr. Ackles and sprinted into the room.
“Load her up with epinephrine, get me a crash cart!” you called, pushing the code button. “Starting compressions!”
The nurse administered the medication via Amanda’s IV while you worked to get her heart pumping again. The code team came in and began to ventilate Amanda while you waited for the paddles to charge.
“Clear!” you called out, and the word was echoed by everyone in the room. Amanda’s heart rhythm showed no pulse on the monitor, but after checking her carotid, you could feel a faint pulse. “Heart’s trying. Beginning compressions again.”
After another five rounds of compressions, you decided it was time to shock her again. The nurse charged the paddles, you made sure everyone was clear of your patient, and shocked her again.
Just as Misha and Jensen walked into the room, Amanda’s rhythm came back. As you stared at the monitor to make sure her stable vitals remained at a good level, the nurse continued to ventilate Amanda. Realizing that the nurse had it under control and the patient was stable you stepped out of the room, past Misha and Jensen, keeping your eyes trained on the ground -- too afraid to see the look on Misha’s face.
“Good work in there, Dr. Y/L/N,” you heard Misha say behind you.
You turned to face him, his comment taking you by surprise, you were sure he would be more than pissed at you for dealing with his patient after he kicked you off the case. He was standing there, arms crossed over his chest, a small smile on his face.
“Thank you,” you replied.
“Why don’t you scrub in on the surgery,” he offered, and your face lit up, “just to observe. Just because you saved Amanda in there doesn’t mean I fully trust you in the OR yet.”
“Of course,” you said, “I completely understand.”
“Her surgery is scheduled for an hour from now,” he stated, “go do whatever it was you were about to do before this happened.”
You nodded and started to walk away.
“Oh, and Dr. Y/L/N,” he said and you turned to face him once more, “don’t overthink it this time.”
He smiled at you before walking off to check on his patients. You tried to suppress the smile that was spreading on your lips but it was useless, you were grinning the entire way to the cafeteria. You ate as quickly as possible, not wanting to be late for surgery, and made your way to the OR.
As soon as you set foot in the OR you felt your nerves taking over again. You took a few deep breaths and reminded yourself that you were just observing, you weren’t going to be directly involved. You caught Selene’s eye from across the room and she winked at you. Even though you weren’t supposed to be working with her being able to be in the room with your best friend set your nerves at ease.
Why couldn’t it have been like this the last time? You thought to yourself as the rest of the doctors filed into the room. Dr. Ackles took his place, with Dr. Collins next to him ready to assist, and as soon as Amanda was completely under from the anesthesia, the surgery began.
As soon as you walked out of the OR you were stopped in your tracks by Dr. Padalecki. She looked more than furious and you could feel yourself turning red from embarrassment. You had deliberately gone against her orders and worked with Selene and you knew you were about to pay for it.
“And what the hell do you think you were doing in that OR with Dr. Hill?” she said.
“I...uh...Dr. Collins...he...” you stammered.
“Dr. Padalecki,” Dr. Collins said, coming to your rescue.
You hadn’t even noticed that he’d come up behind you.
“Any reason why Dr. Y/L/N was in your OR, Misha,” she said, clearly more than pissed off.
“I asked Dr Y/L/N to scrub in, and told her I would vouch for her with you,” Misha explained, “It's because of her that my patient made it to the OR and I felt it would do her good to be able to observe the surgery closer than in the gallery.”
Genevieve looked like she was at a loss for words. Her eyes flitted between you and Misha for a few seconds before she finally said anything.
“Fine,” she huffed, “but this is the only time you’re off the hook for this, Dr. Y/L/N. No more working with Dr. Hill. Understand?”
“Absolutely,” you nodded.
Genevieve nodded at you, happy that you were at least agreeing with her, and walked off to no doubt check on her patients. Misha turned to look at you, clearly about to say something, when Jensen called him over to go talk to Amanda’s parents and inform them that the surgery had gone well. He placed his hand on your shoulder, gave it a squeeze and smiled at you. You returned the smile as he let go of your shoulder and you watched him walk away.
You weren’t sure what surprised you more -- what had just happened between the two of you or the fact that you immediately missed the feeling of his hand on your shoulder.

A/N: I am so overwhelmed by the positive reaction this story has received, seriously guys it’s made my day over and over again. Title comes from The Irony of Choking on a Lifesaver by All Time Low. If you’d like to be tagged let me know! Hope you guys like it! Anyway, feedback for this is awesome! :)
Selene had managed to catch up to you when you made it to the bar. You each ordered a drink before finding a table. You pounded down your first drink and ordered a second one before you even said a word to your friend.
“So, great first day, huh?” Selene ventured.
You scoffed before taking another sip of your drink.
“I just can’t believe I froze up like that,” you sighed, “it was a routine appy. How many times have I read about those or practiced the procedure? What the hell happened to me in there, Selene?”
“I don’t know,” she said, “it was a fluke thing. It happens to everyone. You were nervous. We were thrown into a surgery on our first day, it’s not like we were exactly prepared.”
“Still,” you sighed, taking another sip of your drink, “and what the fuck was up with Dr. Collins? Did you hear how he freaked out on me?”
“Everyone heard how he freaked out on you,” she pointed out.
“Such a dick,” you grumbled as you finished off your drink.
“Can’t say that’s the first time I’ve heard that,” you heard from behind you as a drink was set down in front of you.
You turned your head to see Dr. Collins standing next to you. He looked even more handsome out of his scrubs and lab coat. He was standing there, a smirk on his face, in dark jeans with a blue button down shirt that made his eyes stand out.
“Dr. Collins,” you stammered, “I am so sorry about that --”
“Don’t worry about it,” he laughed, “I’ve heard worse. I came over here to apologize. I shouldn’t have lashed out at you like that. I understand that surgery can be stressful and I understand it was your first day. I also understand that you’re still learning and it’s my job to teach you, not yell at you. So, I’m sorry.”
“Oh, uh, well, apology accepted,” you smiled.
He slid the drink over to you and told you it was on him before he walked away, back toward a table where you noticed a few other attendings sitting. You looked back at Selene and your eyes went wide.
“What the hell was that?” you asked.
“No idea,” she laughed, “but it’s not everyday that attendings buy drinks for their interns, I’m pretty sure.”
“I think you’re right about that,” you agreed.
After a few more drinks both you and Selene, knowing you were slightly more than tipsy, decided to pull an allnighter. You figured it would be easier to stay awake and sober up rather than risk oversleeping and being late for work the next day. Selene followed you back to your apartment. Once you were both settled in your living room you pulled out your old textbooks and decided to study to keep yourselves awake. You figured after what happened in the OR there was no way in hell you were going to let something like that happen again.
When it was finally time to get to work the next day you were both sober, but more than exhausted. You were starting to second guess if staying up all night was a good idea. You expected Dr. Collins to be nicer to you after his apology the night before but that wasn’t the case. He was still cold and standoffish and that just confused you. Then again, you could have been imagining it. You were so tired that you were completely unfocused. Selene was in the same boat and you could tell from the looks Dr. Padalecki was giving you that you were both in for it later.
After checking on a few of your patients Dr. Collins pulled you aside in the hallway.
“You know, Dr. Y/L/N, you’re lucky you’re still on my service,” he stated, “showing up hungover -- possibly still drunk -- and after what happened in surgery yesterday. I have half a mind to reassign you.”
His statement took you off guard. You knew you weren’t on top of your game but you weren’t convinced that you were actually screwing up that terribly. What he said had you more than annoyed and even though you knew you shouldn’t say anything you couldn’t help yourself.
“You seem to forget, Dr. Collins, that you were the one who bought me a drink last night,” you pointed out.
That seemed to throw him for a loop. You didn’t wait for him to say anything, instead you turned on your heel and walked off down the hallway to go check on another one of your patients.
“I’d watch yourself, Dr. Y/L/N,” he called after you.
You kept walking, head held high as you ignored him. You had a feeling he was going to say something to Genevieve about your conversation but you tried to push that out of your mind as you continued on with your shift. You were still off your game and as the day move on the feeling that Dr. Padalecki was going to say something to you kept pushing itself to the forefront of your mind. Sure enough when you went into the locker room to change at the end of your shift Genevieve cornered both you and Selene.
“It’s been brought to my attention, by Dr. Collins, that the two of you were less than focused while in his service today,” she said crossing her arms over her chest, “misdiagnosing patients, mixing up treatments. If this is how it’s going to be with the two of you working together then maybe we need to separate you.”
“What?” Selene said, “No, that’s not the case. We were just up late last night and --”
“At the bar, I know,” she said, “I saw you there. I can’t have my interns showing up hungover and sleep deprived. If this is how the two of you are going to operate then something needs to be done about it.”
“Dr. Padalecki --” you protested.
“No, Dr. Y/L/N,” she said, “for the next few weeks the two of you will be on separate services. Understand?”
“Yes, ma’am,” the two of you replied in unison.
“Good,” she said, “I’ll see you both at pre-rounds tomorrow morning.”
With that she walked out of the locker room, leaving the two of you alone to change. The entire drive back to your apartment building you were fuming. Not only were you having a miserable time working at the hospital you were now being forced not to work with your best friend.
When you finally walked into your apartment all you wanted to do was take a long, hot shower and climb into bed. You kicked off your shoes and dropped your purse and keys on the coffee table before making your way to the bathroom.
You turned on the shower and stripped out of your clothes. Once the water was at the perfect temperature you stepped into the shower and let the hot streams of water wash away the stress of the last two days. After you scrubbed yourself raw and once you were completely clean and your hair was washed your exhaustion started to take over.
You climbed out of the shower, grabbed a towel, and dried yourself off. After changing into your pajamas you climbed into bed and got yourself comfortable, wrapping yourself in the sheets and comforter. As tired as you were, from being up for almost 48 hours, you couldn’t seem to fall asleep. Your mind was running a mile a minute. All you could think about was how Misha had treated you over the past two days.
You couldn’t figure out how he had gone from screaming at you, to apologizing, back to being rude, cold and distant. You thought back to last night at the bar and to the encounters you’d had with Misha over the past two days. As handsome as he was you noticed that he wasn’t wearing a wedding ring. It could have been because he didn’t wear it at work but with how he acted, so hot and cold, you were more than certain it was because he was single.
Makes sense, you thought as your eyes finally started to close, who the hell would want to be married to him anyway? I know I wouldn’t want to deal with that shit every day of my life.
Those were the last thoughts you had before you finally drifted off into a much needed sleep.
