Art Masterpost: Attrition Story by: avide_reader @bookwymofthenorth Art by: sidewinder @hawkland

It was a pleasure working with avide-reader for this round of the @bottomcasbigbang! I was drawn to the story being set in a "canon-adjacent" Men of Letters universe, with a variety of characters I could include in my art. For the title/banner piece, I was inspired by the Men of Letters Bestiary book and wanted to do something in a similar style. I knew that would mean doing a bunch of individual portraits of as many characters as I could, so...I got to work whenever I had the chance these past few months! I did these all on my little 5.75" tondo watercolor block from Magnani; the paper has a kind of unique feel which lended itself to the style I wanted as well.

For the cover I included them only in black and white, but here they all are in full color (and without the fancy borders I added for including in the story text). I had a lot of fun working on visualizing each of them as they appear in the story: Cas, Dean, Charlie, Sam and Abaddon.

I also did this piece of Cas in the Men of Letters bunker kitchen from a scene early on in the story, as it was one of the first images that struck me when reading the draft of the fic.

avide-reader was a wonderful partner to work with and I hope you all go and check out the story now! It's a wonderful read.

Summary: When Ratatoskr, who more commonly goes by Dean these days, get a distress call about an angel nearly knocking down the doors of Valhalla he has to be the one to look into it. Turns out Castiel is an angel with a new job as messenger but he has no idea what he's doing. Dean is willing to show him the ropes, but mostly because the angel is just as cute as he is weird.

Hello, my Soulmate. I hope you have a Happy Birthday.

The first words Dean Winchester ever read on his skin were rather simple.

Simple, and yet, they did so much to Dean. He had just turned eighteen and knowing stories of people who had to wait some years before their counterpart would turn of age as well, he had never put much hope into getting in contact with his soulmate right this very day.

But there it was.

In a very neat, curvy handwriting, black ink on his pale forearm.

Scrambling for a pen, he forced himself to take a few deep and calming breaths. He also forced himself to wait until his hand stopped shaking. Only then did he put the pen onto his arm.

Hi, Soulmate! Happy birthday to you, too!

Staring down at his arm, Dean waited, counting the seconds to the rhythm of his beating heart – although he was sure his heart was racing a mile a minute and going far quicker than the second-hand on the clock on his wall.

It took 227 quickened heartbeats for words to finally form on his skin again.

Oh my God, there you finally are!! I really hope I’m not dreaming right now.
