Fast Times in Jubilife City II Touya & Red
The PokeGear had promised to revolutionize the way trainers could communicate, It paved the way for the technology that would come in the following years. It had done well as a base model and fulfilled all the goals it had been programmed for. It would be a ludicrous assumption however that any trainer would prefer the comparatively ancient PokeGear rather than an Xtransreciever. They didn’t even offer repairs on original Pokegear anymore so who in their right mind would still have one?
Ah, right.
There were many things that Red had known would change once he finally returned to the ‘civilized’ population – Technology hadn’t been one of them. His own Pokegear had stopped functioning properly (See: as a telephone) for years. The handheld system just wasn’t built for such rugged conditions and the faltering signal strength was even worse on the peak of his mountain. Delia had pushed for him to get a suitable phone ever since he had returned home. (Undoubtedly in case he decided to disappear again.) Despite his mother’s worrying the final straw came when the most important function of his Pokegear stopped working; The radio.
Sure even in Kanto the reception was awful but once he realized that there was no service whatsoever in any of the other regions… well that was just unthinkable!
Those fuzzy radio shows and muffled songs had gotten him through a huge chunk of the loneliness that came hand in hand with living atop Mt. Silver and Red would be lying if he said he didn’t still enjoy them.
So he had made his way to Jubilife city, a place that he had been assured was a “Hub” of technology. It had taken the receptionist at the old Pokétch Company nearly half an hour to convince the man that unfortunately his Pokegear was not able to be “fixed” by any means.
"But hey look, you can get a shiny new one for only 30,000 Poke dollars!"
The first unforgivable change was that now he had a utterly inconvenient watch – Wait could this even tell time?
Red hadn’t bothered to read the instruction pamphlets that had been given to him by the clerk. How hard could it really be?
The second, was that the screen was so small that he could hardly make out what options he was shuffling through. Trainer Pass- Feelings check – Friend codes? What was this crap?
He had eventually plopped down on a bench, His fingers clumsily switching through the apps as his brow set into a firm line- determined to figure out this hunk of junk. The moment of absorption was over quickly and Red slammed his hand down on the device with a discouraged groan. Cha picked up on Red’s mood and slumped against his thigh theatrically, body spread out on the wooden bench emulating Red’s sigh.
Both parties were conveniently unaware of the faint buzzing indicative of an outward call. A bewildered voice on the other end of the line catches Cha’s attention. The Pikachu’s ears perk up and he rolls over, nudging at Red’s wrist, prompting him to examine the device.
Outgoing call – Trainer Pass
Elapsed time – 0:04
Recipient – Unkown ID
He had turned his own volume down drastically while fidgeting with the device before, and from Red’s end only ineligible murmuring could be heard. Raising the Xtransreciever to his ear he cranes his neck as if that might help the situation– There was someone on the other line. He bumps his wrist away– How did this even happen?
“Hello?” He calls out apprehensively, volume far too low to hear any response at a normal speaking level. He waits a moment.. clearing his throat. “Hello?!” Red shares a look with Cha, both the Pokemon and its trainer are equally flabbergasted.
"This never would have happened with the Pokegear." Red grumbles to himself, unaware that the person on the other end could hear him perfectly. He quickly looses his patience for the unheard stranger on the other end and makes the assumption that it is HE who is not being loud enough.
“PLEASE DO NOT CALL ME”
He takes a deep breath.
“THIS IS A PRIVATE LINE”
It’d be wonder if his shouting didn’t blow a speaker on Touya’s end. Wait was that an echo of his own voice that he heard so close by? He moves the Pokegear away from his mouth, squinting at it. Did his message go through? Did he have to be louder?
