I am concerned about the upcoming court hearings for U.S. Human Rights Attorney Steven Donziger, who is the victim of SLAPP lawsuits launched by Chevron in retaliation for his work in securing a 9.5 billion dollar judgment against the oil company for their environmental pollution of Ecuador. This judgement was determined by Judge Lewis Kaplan of the Southern District of New York to be unenforceable. The same Judge Kaplan is trying Mr. Donziger’s SLAPP lawsuits. I am concerned about the legal precedent that will be established should Mr. Donziger lose his case. It has the potential to allow corporations to avoid legal ramifications for practices and provides a pathway for silencing the voices of those who oppose them.
