weecest drabble, tw: animal death

"dean, look what i got you!"

eight-year-old sam skips toward his brother, joy lighting up his face.

dean doesn’t look up at first; too absorbed in the comic resting in his lap, lost in daydreams of capes and invincibility, of saving the world. but when something warm and wet splatters across the pages, he blinks, confused.

dean finally looks up, and falters.

sam stands in front of him, arms outstretched, hands offering something with childlike pride. he's soaked in red. blood clings to his face in smeared streaks, thick and glistening. unidentifiable clumps are stuck in his hair. his green shirt is sodden, the fabric darkened and sticking to his small chest. crimson trails down his arms, pooling in his cupped hands.

dean's eyes scan frantically for wounds, expecting to find something torn open, something beyond repair but sam is beaming at him.

he looks like a survivor of a massacre.

dean stares, paralyzed. "sammy," his voice shakes, "what... what is that?"

"i found a fawn," sam explains, as if it were a show-and-tell presentation. "it was crying. i made it stop."

dean feels his stomach drop out. "you killed it?"

sam's grin widens. "it’s for you," he says proudly, taking another step forward. "it was alone. no one was helping it. so i took care of it. i took the best part for you." he lifts the heart higher, blood dripping in thick splats onto dean’s shoes.

dean scrambles to his feet, the comic book forgotten, forever stained with the blood of an innocent creature.

"sam, that’s-jesus, that’s not okay!"

sam’s face falters, his smile dimming just slightly. confusion and something like hurt shadows his eyes. he has the audacity to pout.

"but you like hearts. you always draw them on your letters to me."

dean stares at the heart. it pulses in his vision like it’s still alive. he wants to scream.

"sam, you can’t do that," dean says, trying to sound firm without sounding scared. because if sam hears the fear, he might-

his little brother just watches him.

"why not?" he asks, genuinely puzzled. "it was weak. it didn’t fight back. and you’re my brother. you’re supposed to have the best things."

there’s no remorse in his voice.

dean swallows hard. "it’s not about deserving things, sammy. it’s about... what’s right. this-this is wrong. you can’t just kill things. that’s not how the world works."

"but it should," sam says softly, like dean is the one who doesn't get it. "the world should be better. and i can make it better. for you."

sam’s eyes catch the dying sunlight, and for the briefest second, dean could swear they shine gold.

Aw, thank you, anon! I surely did! It was initially for a Sam Winchester 'zine, in pink (I'm not even sure what possessed me at the time...) but I tweaked it to be animated and red/orange later, which seemed to be a little more hellfire appropriate. :D

the culmination of soulless sam high on demon blood while possessed by lucifer would've put everybody in their place and showed them how it's done. they'd be terrified of him. nobody stood a chance against that and that's why the writers couldn't do it. they knew jarpad would've put his whole pussy into that role and soulless boyking of hell sam would've killed everybody and the show would've ended.
