BOZONE (definition): [noun] - The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.

What’s so funny about this? As you will note, the actual joke and the dialogue in the cartoon are not the same, as they usually are. The word “Bozone” is a word that was created for a contest run by the newspaper The Washington Post. The winners were the best words created by altering existing words to create new, preferably, clever ridiculous ones. This word was created by combining, the ozone, one of the layers of the atmosphere, with Bozo, the clown. The name Bozo itself has become synonymous with fool or clown. The two words fit together very nicely to create the new word, or neologism. It’s exactly how real words are created over time, only in this case, it’s a little too ridiculous. I couldn’t exactly create an atmosphere made up of clowns, so I did the next best thing, which was to place two people INSIDE of Bozo’s mouth to indicate that they were surrounded by clownishness. They’re in the Bozone. This is a state all of us find ourselves in, some more than others. As the joke says the prognosis for the Bozone to evaporate anytime soon is not very good. We all may be stuck there for a while, especially under our soon to be new administration. And THAT’s what’s so funny! This joke was sent to me by singing buddy, Bill Butkowski
