This is an old sketch that I did. :3
A lot of you might not know this about me, but I breed chickens ^^ I have a pretty decent sized operation now, mostly from Jan-May, just hatching specialty chicks and selling grown out pullets/cockerels. I'm usually more focused on the actual egg part of chicken breeding (shell quality, colour, bloom and passing down those genetics) but every once and a while I do a few colour projects too! Probably a year and a bit ago I saw a pair of Lavender Brahma's at my local chicken breeders association meet up, and I just thought they were pretty cool! I had just about every non-standard colour variation of brahma hen, so Lavender would have been a nice one to add to the collection. I ended up doing some "research" online, to see if anyone local sold them, but the only listing I could find was $60/chick USD. So by the time I did all the math on the Canadian conversion rate, what I had to do to get them shipped, what it would cost me for vet papers at the border....It wasn't really worth it.
I did have my Lavender Orp breeding flock, AND I had my brahma flock....soooo two generations of VERY lucky breeding and I HAVE THESE!!!!! I have 7 of these beautiful lavender chicks but these two are the MOST promising body condition wise. (I know it looks like the first one has scissor beak but I PROMISE they don't. They were just post-yawn when I took the picture) They're still a little messy, I can already tell the one is going to be a super lavender like some of my Orpingtons, and they'll probably have a bit of splash or colour leakage...but I'm getting sooooo close!! I would love to be able to breed and sell lavender brahmas just for fun, knowing that they're carrying all of my good egg genetics XD ((Also lol no I will not be sharing how I got Lavender genes on a brahma from scratch, ya'll can look through the pictures of the rest of my flock and figure it out for yourself <3 The genetic puzzle is all part of the fun)
Hi! I was wondering if you have any input on something I was thinking about. How easy or difficult might it be to breed feathered legs out of Brahmas? I have a couple and I absolutely love their personalities and looks, but I also live in a climate that sees quite hot and humid summers. They cope OK, but I know they'd do better without those leg warmers. I dont breed chickens now, but its something I'm interested in pursuing in the future. Thanks!
Feathered legs are pain in the ass to breed out because there are multiple genes that cause feathered legs and some of them of are recessive so you could have a breeding project that has clean legs but suddenly you will have a couple generations with feathered legs and it takes forever to get birds who dont have any sort of feathering at all on the legs.
Brahmas ESPECIALLY have alot of those tricky leg feather genes (like sometimes vulture hocks my beloved) so it would def take at least a few years to get a good line of brahmas with clean legs , the right type and the right size. Its possible but it would take work and careful selection.
You would want to use a clean legged breed with a pea comb that is the same color and heavy type as brahmas so Silver Columbian, Buff Columbian, ect. I would suggest Wyandottes since they come in silver columbian
The Buff Brahma flock enjoying free range in the yard today. They are maturing nicely.
So one of the Brahmas started laying today...
Was already having a bit of A Day and then saw this through the garage door. Hucking fell girl, what were you thinking?
Though, to be fair, she isn't getting the best example from the bantams, but at least those lay inside and not on a poopy board...
In a slight twist it was now Bouble's egg outside the box
Cute egg though, even if it's a bit oblong and, you know, poop stricken. Many speckles.
Me back in the 80s with a few of my heifers
It's Cow Appreciation Day (really) and I thought these Brahmas near Yoakum, Texas, are worthy. #cowappreciationday #brahmas https://www.instagram.com/p/BztVYw1lEc1/?igshid=1vbg5d7xgzw5d
