There was an innate charm to early Mausoleum and Noise releases, and Brainfever’s “Capture the Night” was one of those unpretentious mid ‘80s bangers that brought a smile even though it not only didn’t do anything new or interesting, but wasn’t even that well executed.  But enthusiasm went a long way during metal’s most fertile era, and the German act had that to spare, from the slamming opening riff to Horst Neumann’s yelping and yowling and the joyously random double kicks.  “Capture the Night” existed solely to bang and kick a little ass, and did so without the slight winking vibe that most trad metal throwback groups can’t help, instead rocking out with the joy that came from discovering a sound that was simply too awesome not to try to get a piece of.

Wednesday, April 17: Brainfever, “Danger of the Night”

Noise and SPV were the more well-regarded ‘80s independent German metal labels, but Mausoleum was constantly bubbling under and trying to gobble up whomever was left on the scene.  And so they released Brainfever’s Capture the Night, which was prototypical mid ‘80s traditional metal and full of bangers like “Danger of the Night.”  The tune marauded capably and with no shortage of energy and hooks, with Horst Neumann’s vocals and Marco Böttcher’s riffing being especially likable.  This wasn’t anything more than a fun metal tune, but it was fun, and that was enough to get Brainfever through 3 albums before ultimately disbanding.

During summer months, the call is easily detected by its repeated calls : a loud, screaming dee dee dit, repeated with monotonous persistency 5 or 6 times, rising in crescendo and ending abruptly.
