#97: “Your life was my life’s best part.”
“Do you regret it?” Kelly asks.
Nick turns to frown at Kelly. “Regret what?”
Kelly gestures vaguely around them. They’re in the cabin in Colorado, getting ready to make the bed. Tomorrow is a special day, and they have to be prepared for it properly. There’s a wicked thunderstorm lashing at the windows, and the lights flicker briefly, but stay on. For a second, Nick thinks that might be what Kelly’s talking about, until he says, “All of it. This. The cabin. The quilt.” He pauses. “Me. Do you regret any of it?”
“Kelly.” Nick gapes at him. “After all these years...you still think you have to ask me that?”
“Yeah, I kinda do.” Kelly frowns, resting a hand on the headboard as if for support. “You've given up a hell of a lot for me, babe. And I know I was always the one pushing and prodding and dragging you along, and--look, I know you love me. I don’t doubt that. But I’ve gotta ask, Nick. Is there anything you regret about having married me?”
Nick looks down at the quilt in their hands. It’s the quilt Mara Grady made them with the explicit instructions that it was for their marital bed, a double wedding ring pattern with Marine and Navy fabric making up the background.
The quilt’s seen a lot of shit over the years. It’s the quilt they collapsed under as they held each other the first night they were legally each other’s, their rings clinking together as they made love. It’s the quilt Kelly wrapped Nick in and rocked him the day Nick’s mother died and they found out she’d been in the hospital for weeks and refused to see him. It’s the quilt Nick clung to when Kelly disappeared in the wilderness on a hike and he thought he’d lost him for good. Since Mara died, they’ve kept it stored carefully, only bringing it out once a year--on their anniversary--but still, there’s a lot of history they’ve built, on and under and around this quilt. It’s as tangible a symbol of their relationship as the scratched and worn rings on their left hands.
“I regret not having done it sooner,” he says at last.
“Nick. I’m serious.”
“So am I.” Nick looks up at Kelly and pins him in place with his gaze. “I knew, from the moment I realized I had feelings for men, that someday I’d have to decide between what I wanted and what my family wanted. And from the first time we kissed, I knew that I’d choose you over anyone else in the world. I’ve never regretted that. I don’t regret loving you. I don’t regret a single moment we’ve spent together.”
“Even when we were fighting?”
“Even when I thought you were going to walk away from me forever.” Nick drops the quilt in place and comes around the bed to cup Kelly’s chin. “Your life was my life’s best part. How can I regret anything in a life that brought me this?”
He leans forward and kisses Kelly, hard and hot despite their age. Kelly grabs his shoulders and kisses him back, and slowly it gentles from passion to affection without somehow losing anything.
Kelly slides his nose alongside Nick’s as he pulls away and nods. “All right.”
Nick smiles and nuzzles Kelly’s cheek. “Happy anniversary, Doc.”

Y’all know I don’t speculate, right? I mean, I’m...
I’m wondering if the “Cosmic consequences” Cas has - not to mention his deal - will come into play as well. It kind of sounds like God isn’t the biggest thing out there, so maybe *his* father will take him to task?
I’m now picturing the Shadow grounding Chuck and sending him to his room. :’D
But yeah, the one thing we really don’t have any information on yet is WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON IN THE EMPTY WITH JACK AND BILLIE AND THE SHADOW? Honestly that’s the one bit of the story I’m truly bouncing in my seat waiting to get, and the fact we haven’t heard a peep about it yet is interesting in itself.
How will all of this affect Cas? I think we’re going to have to wait for midseason or so to truly understand what the big consequences are.

Yeah the door imprint cracked me up. It was about 8″ at that point, now it’s up near a foot, apparently.

We got 3+ inches of rain from that storm, which makes me very happy it wasn't snow.

We come from the same bled. I took the bus at 10:30 and it was like a sea of snow.... up to my knees in our entryway. ❄️��❄️

Moved here July 2016. Hubby’s last day in uniform is mid June 2018. After 9 moves in the past 19 years, we’re finally facing retirement and Life After Active Duty ™. (aka wft do we do now?)
@mittensmorgul: Not to mention, Patience’s ability might exacerbate the situation further before possibly helping them forge a friendship. Can you imagine someone with psychic abilities touching Claire’s possessions… like maybe that Grigori sword of hers, or anything, really. What might Patience “see” about Claire that Claire would feel was an extreme invasion of privacy? Her history with angels, her family’s fate. Heck, that time Claire became a werewolf, even.
Working through Patience’s shock and horror over Claire’s life, the reality of monsters she’s experienced, and Claire’s upset at having someone see her whole life like that… watching them get to know one another will be interesting for sure. :)
I hadn’t thought about that at all, but yeah yeah. Claire’s already got so many walls up... that would probably make it even worse while simultaneously giving Patience an opportunity to understand Claire better than most people do.

@brainfuzz: Huh. Patience as a woman of letters and Claire as a hunter. Healthy (or healthier anyway) Sam and Dean parallels maybe?
Ooh, yeah, that’s a good comparison. Alex is kind of fitting into that “scholarly” role, too—at least, that was the case during her last couple of appearances. It’ll be interesting to see how Alex and Patience interact, too. They might bounce off of Claire in similar ways, but how are they going to bounce off of each other? They both have (or had…) a desire to reject the supernatural world and to be “normal,” but they both carry the supernatural with them in different ways… Patience because she has her own powers, and Alex because of the ways her childhood has affected her… If Patience decides to run away from her family, then they have that experience in common, too. That said, Alex ran away from her vampire family for the sake of having a normal (healthy, peaceful) human life, and Patience is potentially going to run away from her normal father for the sake of getting more involved with her supernatural side…
And on that note--
@thedogsled: I can definitely see (if James is still alive) Claire pulling some sort of ‘well if you don’t like it go back to your perfect life then’ stuff, or resentment over the fact that she still has family. God, I am so there for all this drama. How can anyone think these characters are boring?
Oh, man, yeah. I left that aspect out of the post because it’s a little more speculative than I felt like getting (even though it was pretty heavily foreshadowed that that’s going to happen, lol), but—yeah, absolutely. For all that she loves her current lifestyle, I’m sure that a part of Claire would kill to have her old normal life with her parents again. Just like Dean dreaming of what his life would have been like if Mary had never been killed. And then Patience comes along, having that life and choosing to leave it? Time for conflict!
“How can anyone think these characters are boring?”
Especially on their own show, their own story that is actually about them, with their own central character-arcs and their own relationship plots and their own antagonists and struggles, that don’t get sidelined or condensed into 42-minute segments once per year, or brushed off to happen off-screen? That sounds good to me. There’s so many things I’m looking forward to seeing! I mean, I haven’t even talked about Claire and Donna’s relationship yet! (Seriously. Think about that. Claire and Donna.)
I’m looking for the first Sterek fic I read, which got me into the fandom in the first place. It was on Ao3, and Stiles was was a teacher, Derek was working at a wolf sanctuary, and I think Derek had a kid who was in Stiles’ class and Derek ended up coming in to teach the kids about wolves
