"Allergic Reaction to Psychotropic Medication" c.2005, acrylic on canvasboard. Psychotropic medication is usually described as medication for antipsychotics, but I think it's been expanded to fit most mental illness medication. So, antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication included. When I painted this (it's not like most of my work) is already had trouble with antipsychotic med allergic reactions (usually acute dystonic reaction, aka convulsions/seizure-like reaction requiring medical attention) and it seems the problem is like having too much going on in the brain, (synapses misfiring globally, etc). So I made the painting as busy as possible to reflect that. From what I remember, perception of time is altered, there's a strong chance of delirium (it's happened to me a few times) it's just a horrible, horrible situation that I hope gets more recognition. I don't know if the reason has anything to do with psychosis being a stigmatized condition that the meds for it tend to cause such horrific reactions that sometimes the ER doesn't know how to handle, but in my experience with anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications, there's more known about how to deal with their allergic reactions (brain zaps for antidepressants or brain fog, among other things, for anti-anxiety benzos) than there are for antipsychotic allergies. Although they do recommend 50 mg of Benadryl. Still, I think psychiatrists have a duty to alert the patient or the patient's friends/family about the possible reactions. It would help if more emergency room doctors knew and understood what to do when such a crisis comes up as well. Just my 2 cents.
