Octúbre 5-Clara Nunes! One of the Three Queens of Samba at the time. She was born in 1942 and grew up with her sister as Clara Francisca Gonçalves when she was orphaned at a young age. She sang in choir and studied to be a weaver. However, after winning a contest, she was persuaded to perform on the radio. She changed her name to Clara Nunes and began performing in night clubs and television. She reached commercial success after her album is 1974 sold over 30,000 copies, which fundamentally changed the way Brazil viewed its female singers. She was the first female artist in Brazil to sell over 100,000 copies of a record! She started a a Catholic but converted to Umbanda, an Afro- Brazilian religion, and she frequently performed in the traditional costume. She died at the age of 40 in 1983 but still lives in as one of Brazil's most beloved female artists
