I have been thinking a lot recently, about Stigma that comes with mental health, to be honest i have been driving myself crazy. Before I was officially diagnosed I was asked by a mental health team member I was seeing at the time, if I really wanted the official diagnosis due to the stigma that is attached to BPD specifically I suppose you can say in a sense that they were looking out for me as they didn’t want my diagnosis to hinder any future plans I had... but at the same time isn’t that part of the issue? That society will not accept me as an individual with BPD, despite the fact I am high functioning and was clearly capable of holding down jobs, even completing university. The last thing you want is to be hindered by thoughts of what others will think of you when all you want to do is get better... I have been going round in circles in my head about what I can be doing to help break down that stigma more and honestly it seems so overwhelming I don’t even know where to start... I often feel like I have got absolutely no where with trying to promote a more positive attitude towards mental health, but I am also so hard on myself I can’t often see my own achievements as I get so blinded by my own negative image of myself... Yet despite the darkness that is BPD, I am glad I took the diagnosis. I’m glad it’s official, Because with it I have been able to find the strength to speak up about my personal journey. In my darkness, despite how terrifying it can be, I have found my voice. Despite how terribly lonely it can feel sometimes I know I’m not alone in my feelings, and through sharing and being open and vocal about it all, that’s how we can make more positive changes. There is so much light that comes from my darkness, and I hope you all continue this journey with me to keep the conversation of mental health going, and to break down those boundaries and stigmas along the way.
