geometry and simple elegance come together to form a harmonious whole in this post-war modern façade.
geometrie und einfache eleganz verbinden sich bei dieser nachhkriegsmodernen fassade zu einer einheit.
As the oldest prefab architectural element the brick has a rich history that is still being continued: new production processes allow for greater variability in shapes, surfaces and application areas. Unfortunately, this renewed appreciation of the brick happens at the expense of traditional brickyards that all too often can’t remain competitive in a global market.
But I didn’t want to rain on the brick’s parade as the present volume shows just how variable and expressive the brick still is: „Brick by Brick: Architecture and Interiors Built with Bricks“, published by Gestalten in 2022, offers a visually stunning overview of contemporary brick architecture and interiors. The book features 42 contemporary examples of brick architecture and interiors from all over the world and showcases the innovative use of this ancient material. In the context of sustainability the brick also has hit the limelight again and especially in connection with recycling economy is a great alternative to other materials.
The examples featured in the book are (as is always the case with books from Gestalten) brilliantly photographed and showcase the variety of brick in existing contexts as well as newly constructed buildings. What is striking is the particularly innovative use in Asia as demonstrate projects in Vietnam or China that beautifully bridge tradition and modernism.
„Brick by Brick“ is a beautiful showcase of the topicality of the brick not only as a beautiful material but also as a piece in the sustainability puzzle of architecture. A nice read!
This is IIM Ahmedabad’s older yet highly underrated cousin. It’s not just another brick in the wall.
