Tuesday, December 2: British Lion, "Spit Fire"
The Burning went a ways towards making British Lion sound less like weekend warriors and more like an actual band, though Steve Harris’ production remained basement-level sterile. “Spit Fire” was co-written by Harris, Richard Taylor and David Hawkins but still sounded more than a little Maiden-esque, though it was actually a little more galloping than most of Maiden’s recent material thanks to the swinging charge and occasional double bass from Simon Dawson (which turned out to be a prelude to his eventually taking over for Nicko). The tune was semi epic in a way that one could imagine Bruce Dickinson really tearing into it, even if Taylor was obviously and justifiably not aiming for that kind of singing. If anything Taylor and Hawkins might’ve kept Harris in check, since the track felt a bit more earthbound in their hands and would’ve probably been at least 4 minutes longer had Steve kept it for Maiden. But as a British Lion number, “Spit Fire” felt a bit amateurish but still enjoyable.

These will be my number 3 and 4 shows, on the 6th and 7th of December.
I will also, for the first time, be at the British Lion on December 5th.

BEAT GOES ON: After 65 U.S. tour dates, BEAT, the Adrian Belew- and Tony Levin-fronted band playing the 1980s King Crimson catalog, announced a show for May 6, 2025, in Chile.
“These have been some of the most special concerts I have ever experienced,” Belew said of playing alongside Levin, guitarist Steve Vai and drummer Danny Carey.
“Pure joy.”
SIMON DAWSON IS NEW IRON MAIDEN DRUMMER: Simon Dawson has joined Iron Maiden, replacing Nicko McBrain, who retired.
Dawson plays alongside Maiden bassist Steve Harris in British Lion.
