In a town that’s crazy about brunch, Broder Café, which offers Scandinavian/Nordic fare, is often mentioned and highly regarded. It’s a small place and there’s often a line, even before they open. The Clinton St. location is the original; they’ve since expanded to several other locations. We waited 40 minutes even though there were only 3 parties ahead of us on the sign in sheet. The décor was simple with lots of wood and homey. The salads topped with baked eggs looked appealing. The food is intentionally kept simple.

The breakfast menu includes egg dishes, pancakes, porridge, crepes, etc. They also had some pastries by the register. For lunch, choose from salads, soups, burgers, Swedish meatballs and open faced sandwiches (smorrebord). Coffee from Water Ave. comes with free refills ($3.50).

* Aebleskiver (Danish pancakes, small order – 4 pieces with housemade lemon curd and lingonberry jam, $8): Served in a skillet and dusted with powdered sugar, these were beautiful golden brown round pancakes, the Danish version to takoyaki. They were soft, hot and fluffy on the inside and lightly crispy on the outside.
