Broken Bonez :: 5 on 5 - with Connor Doyle of The Dear Hunter
For those of you that are unfamiliar with The Dear Hunter, they are a progressive rock band fronted by singer/writer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Casey Crescenzo; accompanied by my good friend and brother from another, guitarist and fisherman extraordinaire, Connor Doyle.
I've been lucky enough to call Connor my friend over the past 6 years, and one of his greatest passions outside of music, is fishing in the great Pacific of Southern California. So, for this month's Broken Bonez newsletter, I thought I'd sit down with him and get his Personal Rules or Guidelines for Fishing in Southern California.
5 - Expect nothing more than a wonderful day in nature. You will have plenty of days out on the water where you swear to yourself that there's not a single fish in the ocean, lake, or stream. Just remind yourself that catching fish is not why you do it. It's about chasing that adventure and balancing your life.
4 - Be mobile. When you see guys on the internet or pics at your local tackle store of people catching their "dream" fish, know that they aren't the people that hit the same A.O.'s every single weekend. They're the people who put the time in and the miles on the car or boat risking defeat to find that ultimate honey hole that no one else knows about.
3 - Educate yourself. The more you know about the environment you're fishing in or the particular fish you're after, learn absolutely everything you possibly can about it. Seasonal info, tide info, spawning info, the fishes diet and preferably water temperature...
2 - Have fun! I've been on the surf or on a boat with far too many people that look way too stressed out to be fishing. Fishing is FUN! Always keep it that way. If your fishing habit is becoming stressful or your fresh off a good skunking and can't handle it, go do something else!
1 - RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT! The best part of fishing is gaining the respect for nature first hand. If you're fishing at the beach or at your local lake, always make sure that you leave it a cleaner place than when you got there. I like to bring an extra bag just to pick up any trash I find wherever I'm fishing. If you enjoy keeping your catch, always keep yourself educated on size and bag limits. Know that they are there for a purpose and not just to hold you back from feeding all of your neighbors.
