Meet Miguel, owner of Luna Grocery on the corner of Hegeman Avenue and Fountain Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn.  Miguel is committed to supporting the health of the community by providing a great amount of healthy food in his store.  Miguel actively participates in Shop Healthy NYC and received free nutrition education and technical assistance to improve his store to the best that it can be.

Whether you are shopping for lunch, dinner, or just a snack, Luna Grocery has a healthy choice for you!  Check out the sandwiches on whole wheat bread and meal combos with fruit.  Whole grain pasta and cereals, brown rice, low-sodium canned beans, vegetables and soups are always available here. Meet Carlos, owner of Dumont Deli & Grocery in East New York, Brooklyn. Carlos is trail-blazing the way to healthy food access and improving the health of his community by providing new and exciting healthy food options for his customers.  By participating in Shop Healthy NYC, Carlos received nutrition education and technical assistance in making his dream of a healthy store a reality. He even lost 20 pounds in the process!

Stop in to Dumont Deli & Grocery for a healthy sandwich of turkey, lettuce, tomato and mustard on whole wheat bread. Ditch the chips and make it a combo with fruit and a bottle of water!

BROOKLYN KNOWS

Yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of the Brooklyn DPHO, Dr. Aletha Maybank and Assistant Commissioner of HIV/AIDS Prevention & Control, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, spoke at the Brooklyn Knows HIV Testing Initiative’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) workshop. The MOU workshop brought together Brooklyn Knows partners to discuss how they can more effectively create MOUs to expand the reach of the Brooklyn Knows HIV Testing Initiative. 

Brooklyn Knows is one of the largest HIV testing efforts in the country. This initiative aims to test Brooklyn residents who have never been tested for HIV and link HIV-positive individuals to quality care and supportive services. Over 85 community partners joined the Initiative in the first year alone and the list continues to grow. These partners share similar goals to:

Goal 1: Provide a voluntary HIV test for every Brooklyn resident who has never been tested. Goal 2: Identify undiagnosed HIV-positive persons in Brooklyn and link them to care. Goal 3: Make HIV testing a routine part of health care in Brooklyn.

According to recent research, it is estimated that if 90% of women breastfed exclusively for 6 months, the U.S. would prevent nearly 900 infant deaths and save $13 billion each year. We have laws protecting a women’s right to breastfeed in public, but we need to change the societal culture to accept and embrace these rights.”

To kick off National Breastfeeding Month, the Brooklyn Breastfeeding Empowerment Zone along with Bedford-Stuyvesant Family Health Center WIC Program, and Council member Robert E. Cornegy hosted the Sixth Annual Breastfeeding Walk on August 1, 2014. 

The 2.3 mile walk throughout Bedford-Stuyvesant, was completed by 100 mothers, fathers, children and supporters alike, and achieved one of the Breastfeeding Empowerment Zone’s messages: to mobilize communities to provide local breastfeeding support and promotion.
