Tom Sachs Brings Boombox Culture Back to the Brooklyn Museum.

We are thrilled to be partnering with students from Brooklyn College's Performance and Interactive Media Arts (PIMA) graduate program this weekend for Assembly Required. Each performance will combine live performance, technology, and interactivity in response to environment at the Brooklyn Museum. We had a chance to catch up with the three student groups before they start loading-in on Friday so that they can tell you about all of the different community partners they have formed to present a lively weekend of programs for our Brooklyn Museum community. Here’s more on The Circle Lives:

Despite the closing of many of the long-standing roller-skating venues in New York City including Brooklyn’s Empire - the “birthplace of roller-disco” - the Central Park Skate Circle has survived and thrived. The Circle Lives is a document about the power of assembly, dance, public music and art. Through an interactive audio journey and ritual performance, this project illuminates the dance skating community as an embodiment of what makes New York New York. 

The Circle Lives uses interviews, archival text, video, and performance to record what audiences see at the Circle and illuminates some of the unseen stories of “The Circle” and the people who keep skate dancing a lively part of New York. The performance will culminate with a live set by long time Circle DJ, Misbehaviour, on Sunday the 17th at 3:00.
