Watched the musical “Daens” (Studio 100), recorded live in the Puurs (Belgium) theatre in May 2022.

The catholic priest Alfons Daens was Belgium’s Charles Dickens; he exposed the dire working conditions in the textile industry of Aalst.

The music was written by the (film) composer Dirk Brossé, John Williams’ Belgian friend.

But you must be wondering why anybody would perform a musical in an industrial park. Here’s why: Studio 100 has converted a huge hangar into a high-tech stage. For each scene, new WiFi-driven set pieces move into place. Even the grandstand with the 1,800 visitors moves about, obeying the orders of the computers in the control room.

Not a pretty CD cover, I know, but I’m happy I now own this soundtrack. (And the composer kindly signed it for me…)

I tried to buy the score back in 1989 but the run was sold out.

True story: Dirk Brossé has a cameo role in this Belgian movie. The trumpet player who had been hired turned out to be a no show and Brossé, who visited the set that day and trained on the trumpet, stepped in.

Second true story: my cousin also has a cameo role in the movie. Wearing a bowler hat, he drives a horse-drawn carriage to the field where the farmer’s party with the musicians takes place. (The IMDB database can confirm that for you: search for Coco in “Boerenpsalm”.)

This is a score from the early days of Brossé’s remarkable career.

The man from Ghent now conducts orchestras all over the world, he even replaces his friend John Williams on certain gigs.
