A Beatles Question:

On June 21, 1962 Bruce Channel, fresh off his #1 single “Hey! Baby”, performed at the New Brighton Tower Ballroom in Wallasey England, just across the Mersey River from Liverpool. Also on the bill was a promising local band, The Beatles.

Every Beatlemaniac knows of this gig, as it was here that John Lennon got tips on playing harmonica from one of Channel’s backing musicians, a young Fort Worther named Delbert McClinton.

In the above photo (L-R: drummer Pete Best, John Lennon, Delbert McClinton, Bruce Channel, Paul McCartney, George Harrison) Paul and Delbert seem to have traded jackets. Which brings me to my question:

Can anyone tell me if this was the last time The Beatles performed onstage in black leather jackets?

The summer of 1962 was heading towards autumn. The Beatles were heading towards the release of their first single. In this episode of The Beatles60 podcast we talk about the convoluted path ‘Love Me Do’ followed to be that first single. It included some drama for Ringo. By the time ‘Love Me Do’ was released, there was a feeling that the relationship between George Martin and the Beatles was starting to solidify. During this period, Bruce Channel's "Hey! Baby!"--with Delbert McClinton playing harmonica--was one of the Beatles' favorite songs. On June 21, 1962, Channel and McClinton headlined a show that included the Beatles; "Hey! Baby!" had become a Top 10 hit five weeks earlier, so Lennon probably saw it performed live that night. A harmonica player himself, Lennon liked McClinton's style and tried to imitate it. The Beatles added Lennon's harmonica to "Love Me Do," then "Please Please Me," "From Me to You," and several other early songs until they recognized their own overenthusiasm and stopped using the harmonica altogether.

I kind of miss John's harmonica playing.
