RAVENCLAW: “The world is a house built from contradictory blueprints, less a story than it is a conversation.” –Bryan Camp (A City of Lost Fortunes)
TL;DR: The City of Lost Fortunes is an incredible urban fantasy that pits demigods, gods, and even a couple plain old people against one another in a battle for the soul of New Orleans. P.S. there’s zombies and talking dogs. 5 stars! Full review here
The City of Lost Fortunes - Bryan Camp
(Crescent City #1)
Synopsis:
The fate of New Orleans rests in the hands of a wayward grifter in this novel of gods, games, and monsters.
Jude Dubuisson knows things he shouldn’t. He has the supernatural ability to find lost things, a gift passed down to him by the father he has never known—a father who was more than human. But so much was lost during Hurricane Katrina that it played havoc with Jude’s magic, leaving him overwhelmed and cursed.
Jude has been lying low since the waters receded, hiding from his own power, his divine former employer, and a debt owed to the fortune god of New Orleans. When the fortune god is murdered, Jude is drawn back into a world full of magic, monsters, and miracles—and a deep conspiracy that threatens the city’s soul. As Jude investigates the fortune god’s death before the killer can strike again, he discovers what his talent for lost things has always been trying to show him: what it means to be his father’s son.
Weird & Wonderful Wednesday
Jude can find lost things, or, he could before Hurricane Katrina hit. He’s a street magician who’s been hiding from those he owes, as well as his former employer. But, he can’t stay out of the world of magic and gods for long as a Fortune god dies and the killer may kill again.
It was a fun urban fantasy read set in New Orleans. It had lots of great world building, and it reminded me just a little bit of Neil Gaimen’s American Gods. Oh, and, it’s a series, too. That is always a plus in my book.

It’s so hard to pick my favorite books.
I mean, you read so many, right? Or, well, I read so many. If there were a monster that could only fill the deep gullet of its belly with words, then I would be that monster. I read a LOT. It’s like breathing.
So every year I try to keep a list of the books that make me smile or laugh out loud or weep uncontrollably and every year I doubtless fail. I know…

Waiting on Wednesday: The City of Lost Fortunes by Bryan Camp
Waiting on Wednesday is a regular feature that spotlights those upcoming, can't-wait-for-them books that are definitely going on my reading list... check out previous Waiting on Wednesday picks here ➤
New Orleans is one of my favorite cities in the world — there is no other quite like it, with its rich history and mythology and colorful characters. If it weren't for the less than perfect weather, it'd probably be the place I call home! Since my fascination with New Orleans was first born in the pages of a book (Anne Rice, obviously), any story set there automatically has my interest.
Mix a post-Katrina NOLA with a good dose of "magic, monsters, and miracles," add in a few mortal gods who can get killed, top it all off with a magical grifter, and you have a new urban fantasy series that goes from "interested" to "must read."
The City of Lost Fortunes, this week's Waiting on Wednesday pick, has all of the above, so go check it out...
