2001
Mai is frustrated. She feels very alone and uninformed since Naru had never told her the real reason that Gene had been in Japan when he died.
Naru grills Gene about what he did with Mai. He’s so jealous. Gene also left some of his luggage at Mai’s apartment so they’d have an excuse to see her again. Better yet, “I think I like her” Gene admits to maybe having a crush on Mai!
Naru wonders if Mai had the choice, which twin would she choose?
They go for a walk and surprise! They bump into Mai whom was attempting to run her frustrations out. The twins invite her to be their guide around Kyoto. On their walk home, the secret is revealed. Gene was not in Japan to research mediums and spiritualist, though he did do some of that. His true goal was to find answers about his biological parents. This is also the reason for Naru and Gene’s argument: Naru doesn’t think the research is necessary, Gene thinks it is.
Naru, wiser now that he’s lived three lives, apologizes to his brother. Apparently, the first time around Naru always wondered what Gene had found out. They agree to research together. Turns out Gene really hadn’t found anything besides their father having died in a natural disaster a few days before they were born.
Naru sneaks away to see Mai that night and it’s no wonder Gene is growing more suspicious of them.
Naru needs to tell Gene the truth but it never feels like a good time.
Back in the hotel room, Naru finds information on their parents in a few minutes that Gene couldn’t find in a few weeks. Though, information on their mother proves more difficult to find. They agree to hit the library for more resources.
Their grandparents are still alive. They have a number but agree to call at a better time.
Out for a tea break by himself, Naru spots Mai waiting on a bench across from the library. She hadn’t known they would be their but something told brought her there. She just couldn’t go to school. Naru takes her to tea.
They hold haaaaands.
Mai wonders if Naru and Gene will continue to get stronger and develop more abilities they didn’t get to last time. Hint hint.
Back at the library, the boys find out they were orphaned not because they weren’t wanted but because their mothers’ family probably don’t know they exist in the first place.
By the end of the night, Gene has resolved to take Naru and Mai to Nagano instead of Kyoto. Remembering this was where Gene met his demise previously, this makes Mai and Naru nervous.
The next morning an exhausted Naru calls his grandparents. Turns out their parents were planning on moving back to Connecticut but were caught in the earthquake. If they hadn’t, Gene and Naru would have never met the Davises and wouldn’t be orphans.
They wonder how their newfound family will take learning of the twins abilities.
With all this new information, Naru finally tells Gene the truth. Time travel and all. Gene wants to be alone.
Unfortunately, Mai has one of her feelings and she ends up finding Gene all alone and trying to come to terms with it all. She tries to help but makes it worse.
Feeling angry and tired of being lied to, Gene uses an ability to see her memories. This causes Mai to relive her first and second life in a jumble of flashes and scenes. In the end, she collapses.

With Mai unconscious from Gene’s trip into her memories, Naru takes the moment to fill Gene in on the missing pieces. Gene finally relents and admits Naru and Mai are basically made for each other.
When Mai wakes, the three have dinner. They talk about what they are to do after they finally meet their grandparents living in Nagano.
Mai thinks they can stop so many tragedies from happening. Save so many lives if they decide to open the office again. They could stop the deaths of the yoshimi family, stop Yasu’s schoolmate from committing suicide. Save so many people from going missing at the mansion.
Reluctantly, the twins agree to try to open SPR once again. Only thing is, they’ll have to convince Martin and Luella.

Autumn 2001
Mai is alive. Again. She’s apparently slipped on some ice and a nice blond haired, Kansai accented stranger (aka John Brown) helps to back to her feet. Mai is too stunned to do anything but excuse herself.
Mai spots a dark haired boy in the street and calls out for Naru. Unfortunately, this is definitely Gene and he is much too curious for her to pretend it was an accident.
Mai convinces Gene she met Naru on a school trip to London. He believes her, but knows she’s lying about something.
Gene invites himself over to her place for the night. Sneaky bastard.
Gene calls the Davises to check in but Naru and Gene must be fighting. Gene refuses to speak to him.
Lin calls. Naru is missing.
Lin has retained all his memories from the last time line.
The first mention of Lin’s shiki!
Gene and Mai spend the day together, they go to the zoo. Mai invites him to stay with her for as long as he needs.
Naru is still nowhere to be found.
The next day, Mai goes to school. Gene surprises her by waiting by the gate for her after school.
On their way back the pair run into Naru waiting for them by Mai’s apartment.
The twins have a tense greeting. Gene fakes happiness at his brothers arrival. Naru, cold as usual, tells him he hasn’t changed his mind but he’s willing to help him in his endeavor. Gene softens quite a bit at this.
Naru pretends he and Mai are practically strangers and it kills Mai a little on the inside.
Gene and Naru leave together. Mai returns home, alone.
AAAAAAHHHHHHH! An update! UPDATE! I woke up around 3am and found out that BtLT updated. I never went back to sleep. I have this stupid grin on my face for the whole day at work. I still have it now as I am typing this out. Damn XD
There's a party going on in our flat and here I am in my room being the introvert that I am. Haha.. Done in total of 20-25 mins between intervals of seeing to the guests and actually speaking to them to eating and making a second trip to the food table then back in my room to add his backpack and luggage.
I know there's a lot of mistakes and I wished I was using pencil instead of a pen *sigh* oh well.. maybe I'll just fix it digitally.
Also, you guys must be getting tired of me drawing and posting the same scenarios. I am only improving the last drawing I made. Hehehe..
So what yah think? It is based on ABBQ's Beneath the Lilac Tree. Gene's first appearance.
((I'm back! But chapter 1 is on hold for private reasons. Instead we're flashing forward to the future for a standalone story with Ask Shinko (again if you haven't checked out her stuff it's great, please do!). All you need to know is that Double D is now more comfortable with Universe Traveling, and he is experimenting with a piloting system for MOGERF. Hope you guys enjoy it!))
---
Double D had just input the coordinates to the world he was searching for on his home radar into his ship, named MOGERF. His goal was clear: he needed two extremely malleable substances, and after studying the pattern of a particular universe, he finally found what he was looking for.
"Reaching new universe in three...two...one!" he exclaimed, feeling the some turbulence during the passage into this new universe, "Now all that's left is to land. Hopefully the new echolocation system will acknowledge a nice flat surface to land-"
CRASH!!!
Well it was a nice flat surface alright...someone's backyard...well at least this time he didn't hit any trees.
"Oooh..." he moaned, "I need to work on those landings..."
After a moment of regathering his bearings, Double D unbuckled himself, and proceeded to put on his makeshift hazard suit (an old diver's outfit, an oxygen tank strapped to his back, and a fishbowl-like helmet), so he could test the radiation levels and oxygen levels outside. Before he could open the hatch to MOGERF however, that loud crash got the attention of someone...
