Faith's whole motivation to be evil in Season 3 is just so sad to me. She just wants to be welcome somewhere and doesn't feel that with the scoobies.
She works for the mayor because he gives her a home, acts as a father figure, someone who gives her validation. He gives her not only emotional space to be herself, but also a nice apartment that she never had when working with Buffy.
The things that she craved so bad that she turned to a truly evil guy to get weren't even crazy asks. Its sad that thats where her character looked for basic stability.
