"Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart. The really great men must, I think, have a great sadness on earth." - F. Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment
Nobody knew what was going on in Bud's head every time he looked at the female Marine with greasy Y/H/C hair, dirty face and eyes shining so bright. Nobody had the slightest idea that this man might cherish some kind of an affection in his heart for Y/N.
Not even Runner was certain about his emotions that had been bothering him since he saw Y/N stumbling out of the ship at Guadalcanal with rifle in her hands.
But the one thing Bud did know is that she was very dear to him, he was willing to give up his life for Y/N.
Y/N was sitting on the ground right next to Runner, their shoulders and knees touching. His heart was beating so fast that sometimes it occured to him that it might jump out of his chest. On the other hand, Y/N looked pretty much relaxed, probably not even realising the proximity between them and when she laid her head on his shoulder, Runner was so done.
"Awww, look at that!" Chuckler laughed gesturing at the duo, "it's so cute!"
"Shut up, Juergens. Remember I saved your ass last night, I might change my mind next time." Y/N teased him as she sent a cheeky smirk his way.
Leckie just shook his head at the whole situation. He was convinced that Runner feels some kind of an affection towards the female Marine but he had to hear Bud's confession first so the big surprise could be finally released.
"In a fight, they're lethal. Around each other, they melt." Bob joked and showed Runner a thumb up.
"Quit the goddamn poetry, Leckie. You're not writing your Dear Vera letters." Bud frowned with a sign of a devilish grin on his face.
"If you see it that way," Bob raised his hands in the air as a sign of defence, "can I tell you, Y/N, that you look absolutely stunning this day?"
Y/N's cheeks went red and she wasn't able to stop herself from smiling.
"Hey, what the hell, dude?!" Hoosier joined the conversation laughing, "stop flirting with my future wife! She's blushing so hard only because she's embarrassed by your remark."
"You guys never change." Y/N giggled as she pulled a lose strand of her hair behind her ear.
"What do you think, Runner? Won't you say something?" Chuckler smirked at the dark-haired Marine nodding towards Y/N.
"Yeah, c'mon!" Leckie and Hoosier cheered him up, cigarettes hanging from their lips.
Runner rolled his eyes at the duo and sighed. "Y/N," he mumbled, "you're the most beautiful person I've ever seen in my whole life."
The conversation suddenly stopped and everybody stared at the soldier with their mouth wide open. No one expected such a confession, not even Y/N or Leckie.
"There you have it, satisfied?" Runner exclaimed throwing his hands in the air.
"No need to be angry right away," Y/N smiled shyly as she turned to him. "You might want to exchange yourself for my foxhole buddy. We definitely have something to talk about." she whispered to his ear, grinning at everybody around.
"What did you say? What did she say?!" Hoosier's head shot up, clearly desperate for new information.
"Yeah, what was that about? How come he gets a whisper and I don't?" Chuckler encouraged Bill looking curiously at the duo.
"Because, my dear Lew," Runner smirked putting his arm around her shoulders, "you're a fucking idiot."
