Rat Time!! We’re going over some cheap gift ideas :)
Hey MTG tumblr!
I know Tumblr blacklists links in posts, so here's a promo without one! I brew budget EDH decks on the weekly, all aimed towards costing less than the average precon. I'm rather new to the MTG side of tumblr, so if folks could reblog this post, that'd be great! If you want to see examples of what I've done, my pinned post is a directory of everything published thus far- I've been publishing 2 decks every weekend I've been able to.
Budget Combo/Synergy #5

Budget Legacy Deck: Turbo Depths
There's been a lot of doom and gloom lately with buyouts and price corrections of legacy staples (and random RL cards).
But here is a 20/20 flying, indestructible, ray of sunshine
A budget version of Turbo Depths recently made the top 8 of MKM Hamburg. Budget is, of course, relative. This comes in at less than $650. That's a savings of almost $1000 off the stock list and is cheaper than any tier 1 modern list except for fetchless Gift Storm.
Here's the list
The only budget concessions are the bayous and verdant catacombs which were swapped for Blooming Marsh and Llanowar Wastes. The rest of the deck is stock! It makes a fair bit of sense; there aren't many land type synergies outside of U decks and daze so you can run the fast lands with little issue. As Sean Brown notes on mtggoldfish, there's also real upside to not having as many forests as submerge can't blow you out.
The combo
Dark Depths comes into play with 10 ice counters on it. Vampire Hexmage conveniently takes them all off as early as turn 2 thanks to Urborg. The "slower" option is to use Thespian's Stage to become a copy of Dark Depths which will have no ice counters on it. Sure, both lands need to be sacrificed but that's fine if you're winning with a flying 20/20.
Everything else
The rest of the deck is fast mana, protection and tutoring. The fast mana is where the turbo comes in. 4 lotus petals and 4 Elvish Spirit Guides allow you to combo off on turn 1 and all but guarantee you can go off by turn 3. Protection comes in the form of up to 8 discard spells (which are some combo of Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress or Cabal Therapy) and 3-4 Pithing Needles as a catch all against wasteland and whatever annoying permanent you need to answer. The tutor package is also very customizable. Some people run Expedition Map, some use Into the North and almost all run Sylvan Scrying but the most important one is Crop Rotation
Is your Dark Depths being targeted by a wasteland? Sac it and get another one. You can also use it to grab a Thespian's Stage EoT to combo into a pseudo-hasty Marit Lage.
Wrapping Up
This deck is tier 1 and is very strong in the current meta and this is often cited for the sharp uptick in the price of Bayou. It's so nice to see a version that is much cheaper while not being powered down. I hope this helps some of you get into the format and crush people with the mysterious Marit Lage!
Commander Challenge: Budget, yeah, budget.
So disclaimer. Normally i used to say that we would never count the price of the Commander, or basic lands. (This was something that I thought people had when looking at these articles.) I normally just looked at the budget for the deck. Well, I never took notice, but Tappedout puts the price of the commander in the overall price....we’ve been low on numerous occasions... “You’re an idiot!” Yes voice, yes I am. So fun fact, our budget for this deck was $50. The price for the Commander, an Uncommon Commander, well, she’s $12.10. We came in under budget at $47.03.
She’s expensive! “Because she’s worth it.” Yes, yes she is.
