my year in fic: 2025

An annual tradition! Here's 2024, 2023, 2022, and 2021.

Fic-wise, this was a big year for me: I managed to finish not one but two lengthy WIPs, the first of which I'd been chipping away at since 2022. Finishing the first one gave me a lot of confidence that I could finish a WIP (I have a fair number of them hanging around, some of which have many, many words), so obviously finishing the second one makes me feel like I could finish ALL the WIPs. 😅 We shall see what 2026 brings.

In total, I published three fics in 2025: those two now-completed WIPs bookending my fic for this year's remix (my least-read fic ever, but imo one of the best I've ever written?? That's always the way lol).

1) "The Apparent Trap" ~100K words, modern AU, teenage David joins forces with Wanda and Pietro to perform the world's most incompetent parent trap (the Cherik sequel to my Charles & David story from a few years ago) Summary: So much has changed for David recently: after spending the summer on his father’s book tour, he and Dad are closer than ever. In a special mutant program on Saturdays, he’s learning a ton about mutant history—and he even made a new friend, Wanda.

Unfortunately, Wanda’s twin brother, Pietro, seems to love tormenting him—so much that their parents are called in. David had thought his biggest worries were Pietro’s pranks and his ongoing crush on his classmate, Teddy. But none of them could have predicted what would happen when their fathers wound up in a room together... 2) "One Good Turn (The Lost Souls Remix)" ~37K words, Buffy fusion (all X-Men characters, but in a Buffyesque world), featuring Evil!Charles and a fair bit of explicit vampire sex Summary: “He swore he wasn’t imagining it,” Darwin continues. “But…he saw Charles last week.”

Raven’s heart clenches, and she rises involuntarily out of her seat. “Charles is alive?”

“No,” Darwin says, shaking his head. “He’s not.”

For years, Raven was the Slayer, Charles was her Watcher, and Erik was Charles’s boyfriend (and a vampire with a soul). When Charles is kidnapped and their search for him is fruitless, they assume that he’s dead. Before long, though, they learn that he's anything but—and Erik quickly realizes why Charles was so insistent about never wanting to be turned into a vampire. 3) "What We Hold in Trust" ~55K words, modern AU, a blend of mystery and thriller set largely in Charles's hospital room and apartment Summary: Charles and Erik have been married for years: in public, the tabloids have dubbed them New York’s “powered couple,” and in private, they’re deeply in love.

But when Charles wakes up in the hospital, he finds his life has utterly unraveled while he was unconscious. Three years prior, he was hit on the head and sent into a coma-like “telepathic fugue state”; today, Erik is in prison, convicted of attempted murder for a crime it seems like only he could have committed.

Charles knows Erik would never harm him—but will anyone else actually believe it?

Jyn had been prepared to die in that battle, just not prepared to find herself on the other side of it.

Iris the Vampire Slayer AU

Iris is approached by Harrison Wells, representative of the Watcher's Council about her being the new Slayer. And of course Iris calls BS at first, but then she instinctively slays a Vampire who was trying to chomp on Barry's neck and... well, maybe it's not that out there after all.

Barry and Iris hide it from Joe, of course. And Nora and Henry, who are alive and well here. Somehow Cisco and Caitlin wind up involved - Ronnie as a werewolf??? Maybe? - and Iris ends up taking on a vampire who'd been styling himself as her big rival. All seems to be going well for the little vampire slaying squad and their lead Slayer.

Except, of course, Harrison Wells isn't quite who he seems to be...

It'd be a fun story to write, but I'd definitely need to continue (or at this point probably just start over) my Buffy/Angel rewatch to really get in the right headspace for it.

Joe finding out his baby girl is the Vampire Slayer would certainly be... explosive. And he'd be so pissed off at everyone who helped her hide it. (How long would Joe be able to hold up against Barry's sad face? Mitigated by not living under the same roof here, but I still feel like Joe would be susceptible to it. Iris' childhood bestie, probably spent a lot of time around Joe anyway... no way Barry didn't perfect his sad eyes effect against Joe's will power.)

I had the great pleasure to be assigned the wonderful @keire-ke and immediately zeroed in on their Buffy fusion series; I'd been thinking I might do a simple role reversal, but there were a bunch of clear possibilities for "what happens next" in the text, so I ran (far) with it. 😅

This is one of my favorite fics I've ever written, and not just because I'd always wanted to do Evil!Charles. As I said in the notes, I think it will make sense even if you don't know Buffy. The most important thing about Buffy-world vampires is they lose their souls when they're turned, and in rare cases (but somewhat frequently for the main vampire characters lol), they get them restored. The show (which I love, it was my first fandom!!) is a bit inconsistent on the soul vs no soul relationship within an individual, so I play with that here.

Thanks again to @gerec for running the remix as always! I love that this fest is still going strong. (And the fandom, of course—as I remix a pair of fics published 13 years ago!!)

Are you taking crossover prompts? Cause I have this headcanon that Merlin was raised by the Watchers Council (Buffy) but he escaped. Then years later Harry has a run in with vampires and won't stop bugging Merlin about them.

@leeef Okay, so, fun story- I’ve never written anything vaguely in the Buffy verse. I’ve barely READ anything in the Buffy verse, or watched it in several years. I hope I did some justice to your headcanon- please you enjoy this!!

Merlin was a firm believer in the future. In progress and change in ways that the past becomes incomprehensible, in technology and science and the things humanity once called magic. 

But somewhere deep within him, in a voice so other from his own it was impossible to entirely forget, he catologued the Other and filed it away. Just in case.

After all, one never knew when the past would come to haunt them.

Or those in their charge, apparently.

‘Galahad, break the broom.’ It’s a testament to their relationship that Harry didn’t hesitate before doing so, though he sent ????? over the chat function of the specs. The vampire in question seemed to be entertained by the course of events, having parried several strikes and a well-aimed kick with ease. There was a cut where the shoe-blade had cut him, but of course all it had accomplished was angering the beast.

‘Stab him.’

‘The last knife accomplished nothing.’ Harry dodged a strike and parried another with the bristle-end of the broom. He felt ridiculous, but Merlin had never steered him wrong before.

‘Stop talking and stab him in the heart.’  Harry mentally shrugged to himself before going on the attack once more, ducking and weaving and feeling a little bit more like an idiot than he’d like, but what could he do but trust the man who had never before failed him?

‘As you say.’ Harry allowed himself to be backed toward a wall before gracefully spinning them round so the man with the grotesque features was pressed into the wall with the handle of the broom poking out from his chest. ‘That doesn’t seem to have done the trick,’ Harry kept pressure on the bit of wood, holding the struggling man in place.

‘Did you get him in the heart?’ Merlin rolled his eyes, heart in his throat, as Harry held a Vampire against a wall through sheer gall and luck.

‘You know, the human body is incredibly difficult to stab through with cleaning supplies;’ Harry complained.

‘Well, put your back into it.’ It was instructed with the same steadfast tone of diffusing a bomb, the voice that said “I know you can do this if you’d shut up and get on with it.” So Harry, never one to disappoint, put his entire body weight behind the broken broom handle.

And promptly stabbed himself with the blunt end when the man burst into dust.

‘What the absolute-’

‘I expect you here for debrief in two hours.’ Merlin cut him off, not wanting to deal with his reality crisis through long distance surveillance. He would keep the feed on, but mute his own audio, and see how Harry dealt with this on his own.

Then he’d decide what to do.

He watched as Harry frantically looked from the stick in his hand to the smattering of dust on the ground, already being carried off by an idle breeze. He saw Harry inspect the bit that had been stabbed through for any evidence of having been within a human body with nothing to show. He listened to Harry mutter to himself about there being a proper explanation waiting for him with Merlin- whether that would be true remained to be seen- and told himself that as long as the mission had been accomplished it would be fine.

‘There are more things in heaven and Earth, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.’ Harry huffed a laugh as he made his way to extraction, a cab waiting a few blocks away, and Merlin allowed himself a smile.

Perhaps it would all work out in the end.

‘... and you obviously know how it ended.’ Harry finished, settled back in his seat with a glass of whisky and amusement in his eyes.

‘Yes, with a quick disposal and no evidence remaining.’ Merlin drawled, and made as if to file everything away from their debrief.

‘In a manner of speaking, certainly,’ Harry set the glass down and used his hand to grab at Merlin’s forearm, ‘but I’m a bit confused as to the how and the what the fuck did I kill and I’d been rather hoping for a proper explanation.’ Merlin smiled inwardly, his face stoic as if ever was, but set the sheaf of papers down before he reached into his drawer for a book.

A rather old book; the sort of thing one could find if they knew where to look, but would easily look over if they were merely curious. He set it on the table, having come to terms with his foreseeable future in the hours it had taken Harry to arrive.

‘Officially, Galahad, the man died and you disposed of the body in the river in the usual method. The footage backs that.’ Merlin rested both hands on the edge of the book, at once eager to share what he knew and terrified of letting it from his grasp.

‘And, unofficially?’ Harry’s gaze was locked on the tome, confused but curious, like a cat encountering something for the first time. Unsure of how to respond.

‘Unofficially,’ Merlin pressed the book across the desk until it hit Harry’s hands, and then further, ‘you’ve got some homework to do.’

Harry Potter/Buffy fusion

I want a story/series where Buffy, Willow and Xander go to Hogwarts when they're 11, I want them in the same year as Harry and while Harry is off having his adventures the Scoobies are having their own.

Buffy can be from LA and Xander and Willow can be from Sunnydale, all three descended from European witches and wizards. The same year they start school there is a new muggle studies teacher who actually teaches up to date curriculum, it would totally be Giles.

Houses would be up to the writer but I have this head canon that Xander would be Slytherine (he can be crafty when he wants), Willow a Ravenclaw, and Buffy Hufflepuff. Xander and Willow would already be friends, and they would accept Buffy easily because none of them have close friends in their own houses.

They have their little adventures up to their 4th year discovering things about themselves and Giles would become their favorite teacher.  Like Xander has merfolk in his background, but not European merfolk, American merfolk. Bright and shiny fish scales on his tale when he's in the water. Willow could give Hermione a run for her money in brains department, but have a real knack for divination as well.  Buffy would be the fiercest Hufflepuff of all time and she could excel at transfiguration.

One of their adventures could be learning how to become animagi. ^o^ Giles should be an owl...or a hawk. Buffy a mountain lion, Xander a hyena (obviously), Willow stumps me.

Then 4th year comes around and Buffy is called and Giles reveals himself to be her Watcher.  Xander and Willow won't let her face her fate alone and while the rest of the school is distracted by the tournament Giles trains them all and gets them signed p as Council operatives in training.

5th year is where it gets interesting, the two Golden Trios unite and Harry gets new and powerful allies.  I think it would be neat if they all ended up in the Room of Requirement at the same time.  One side of the 'room' could be where Harry plans on teaching his fellow students, but when they walk in its already in use and the other side is like a park with a pond.  Buffy and Willow and Giles could be going over battle tactics.  They all stare at one another for a bit and then Xander flings himself out of the water and to the shore of the pond, his tail reflecting the lights a stunning display of blues and greens. Stunned looks all around.

But yeah...that would be neat.

Tony/Loki/Sif; the Buffy!verse

In a world with vampires, demons and devils, great evils and apocalypses there were three who stood to protect it -- Sif, a goddess of war (the Chosen One), Loki, a god of mischief and chaos (a powerful Witch), and Tony, a man of iron (an inventive part demon). "Why does the world always need saving just when we manage to get some 'quality alone time' to have sex?" Tony demanded to which Loki replied: "Because we have finally managed to get ourselves more than half naked without interruption when we believed we would be able to make a day of it."Sif could only roll her eyes as she got out of the bed and told them pointedly, "You had both better be ready to attend to me once I have returned from slaying this demon or I swear that I will gag you both just so I need not listen to your complaints."
