That's right, we're back again for the third annual Spangel Fanwork Marathon!

This year, we have a few exciting updates!

Firstly, we have an optional theme this year. The optional theme is "changes". You are welcome to interpreet the theme however you want, or not use it at all! Have fun with it.

We also have a discord server open to all Spangel fans this year (whether or not they're interested in participating in the marathon), which you can join here:

Remember, we're open to all kinds of fanworks! Fan art, fanfiction, grahpics, vids, gifs, puzzles, meta, fancrafts, playlists, filk, whatever you want to create! We also welcome readers/commenters and betas! (You do not need to sign up to participate as a commenter or beta reader!)

Sign-up for the 2026 Spangel Fanwork Marathon! Sign-up helps the administrator get a feel for how many and what sort of fanworks to expect,

Instead of a prequel YA book about Spike and Drusilla probably as exciting as Twilight, or a sequel about an improbable slayer/witch, if i was a publisher i would make a collection with multiple volumes of the best btvs and ats fanfictions ever written, as voted by the fans.

Even offering (against payment of course) to the authors to complete the ones never finished.

I'm thinking about all those fantastic fanfics that disappeared with the sites that hosted them (Near her Always was such a good place for Willow's fans until this year). All this collective culture that might be lost with nobody left to remember it.

And I'm saying this as someone who was really not into fanfic until i rewatch Buffy and was left with the burning desire to have more of my favourites characters and couples and ended up blown away by the quality of the writing for some authors.

Other fandoms have done it and have published few books including exclusive fanarts and fanfics but with a real publisher leading the project, it would be so much more accessible.

Spangel Fanwork Marathon 2026 - Deadline Approaching Soon!

It's getting to be that time! Yup, works are due on the 28th this year (if you can get them in by 10 am US Pacific time on the 28th of April that'd be great but if they're a little later that's fine) and we're coming up to that deadline! We have not met our goal of two weeks of reveals yet.

So, please submit your works ASAP!

I will be offering emergency extensions only this year. Please contact me if you need them and you will be granted an extra two days. If you're going to need an extension, please contact me before the deadline!

Please try to get your work in on time if possible! Having all works in before May 1st really helps me have the time I need to get the reveal schedule sorted out, especially while I juggle my irl responsibilities.

That's right, it's getting to be that time of year again! Spring is right around the corner, and with it the annual Spangel Fanwork Marathon!

March 1: Sign-up opens

April 1: Sign-up closes, collection opens for posting

April 23: Last day to request deadline extension

April 28th: Works due

May 1st: Reveals begin (1 per day)

It’s time for another wonderful Spangel (or Spangelus, etc.) fanfiction recommendation that we think is worth your attention. This week’s rec is a blast from Spangel Marathon's of the past.

Title: Upper Hand

Author: vampbrat / @bigbad1880

Rating: M

Warnings: No archive warnings apply

Pairing: Angelus/Spike, background fanged four

Characters: Angelus, Spike, Darla, Dru

Summary: Spike's injury throws a spanner into the family's plans for the night. Angelus wants to spend nurturing quality time, Spike is frustrated by Angelus' insistence that he's 'not ready yet' to take things a little dirtier, badder, wrong-er.

Why we love it: This is a wonderful modern fanged four AU with lots of great characterization! It’s a wonderful exploration of what Angelus and Spike’s dynamic could look like in such an AU. This is a very character driven story, almost a character study, and vampbrat does an excellent job of bringing out the complexities in these characters. This fic was written for our very first Spangel Fanwork Marathon back in 2024!

It’s time for our last wonderful Spangel (or Spangelus, etc.) fanfiction recommendation that we think is worth your attention before the marathon begins! We are closing our recs out with a short but powerful rec, that hits you hard right in the feels with the angst!

Title: The Grieving Process

Author: Winterlive

Rating: PG-13

Warnings: Choose not to warn, but it’s a post BtVS S5/AtS S2 fic so you can probably guess the major angst source in this work

Pairing: Angel/Spike 

Characters: Angel, Spike, brief Willow and Dawn cameos. 

Summary: Angsty snippet of Spangel. Takes place just after the end of BtVS s5, AtS s2. 

Why we love it: This fic is short, but really packs an angsty gut punch! It slots into canon very nicely, and features lots of wonderfully vivid imagery and internal monologue. If you’re an angst fan, this one is for you!

Why we love it: This is a wonderful post-Destiny fic, with all the Spangel feels! It’s got a bit of smutty goodness, too, and is the perfect blend of sexy and emotional. Jane Davitt’s characterization of both boys is wonderful, and we think you’ll love it!

Summary: Initiative wins AU series; see individual fics for summaries. 

Why we love it: Today we have a whole series for your enjoyment! Hostiles is a whumpy darkfic series (it reads rather like one continuous fic) featuring lots of delicious suffering for our favs. There’s a bit of comfort sprinkled in amongst the hurt, and the intense hurt makes it all the better! If you’re a fan of whump, we think you’ll love this series!
