Finally got a picture of the sow bugs that do most of the work in the compost. It’s under a cut so no one has to see hundreds of tiny bugs or a piece of decomposing squash without wanting to see it.
They used to be hard to photograph, but now there’s so many they don’t make much effort to hide. They’re kind of tricky to remove from the finished compost so I’ve been removing some, letting it sit overnight in a shallow container to let most of them leave, and then picking the few out by hand that just didn’t want to relocate. Since they do eat plant material, I don’t really want to mix them into containers where I’m planting. This is a tiny sampling of the bin and is maybe 1/100th of the sowbugs on the surface, not counting all the ones living in the layers below.
