Tryna figure out what a bugbear is and "HIMBOFY" it to mess with people

I once brought up how Bogleech brought back the term "bugbear" to refer to the generic hairy horned monsters seen in childen's media, but do you have any idea where that monster archetype may have originated? The earliest example I can think of is probably Where the Wild Things Are.

I mean… demons/devils have been drawn as hairy and horned for a long time now, so if nothing else it’s definitely part of the mythic landscape.

I meant to post these up in June, but life happened. @bullybeast and myself put together a prompt list for JuneBugbear, a new creative daily challenge for the month of June and we had a whole bunch of people participating, which is so dang cool!

These are the ones I managed to do, though I couldn't finish the entire month because I had deadlines. Regardless, enjoy my bugbears!

Thing that keeps bug(bear)ing me about the first episode of Mighty Nein animated - does the writer hate bugbears?!

We see three that I noticed, none of whom were named, all of whom suffered greatly.

On a meta level I suspect it's that they are different enough to remind us we're in fantasy space but similar enough for us to immediately empathise with, as one off characters (presumably), but it was a distinct pattern.
