Breaking the silence (not the bank)

As a Student Financial Capability Officer I spend up to seven hours a day talking about money - with the occasional break to talk about films, food and fitness (or lack of). People come to the office with the purpose of discussing their finances and money worries, but even here, people can find it difficult to be open. Money is a sensitive subject, whether you have an abundance of it or you've almost maxed your overdraft. 

The hours I spend talking about money are usually between 9am and 5pm, because even though talking about money is a big part of my life - seeing students one-to-one about funding, giving talks about financial capability - I can also struggle to talk about money in my own life. Even small money matters can be difficult for people, like how to split a bill in a restaurant, how to have a cheap night out when your friends want to go in rounds, how to remind a friend that they borrowed that tenner from you last week. Yes it's difficult, sometimes painful, because you don't want anyone to think you're a scrooge and you may not want anyone to think you can't afford it. But talking about money is actually a great way to manage your money. Even talking about these little things, as they can all add up. It can also help ease any anxiety about money as you're not storing it up until it's a heavy weight. And if you don't feel that you can talk to the person who orders the lobster then wants to split the bill, or the friend who's forgotten about the money they owe you, then think of a friend or family member who you can talk to and whose advice you value. It's not about complaining and it doesn't have to be about asking for help, it's just working through a situation with someone, and as cheesy as this next line sounds, that someone could also be a Money Adviser in your University!
