I really wish Magnus and Alec had not gotten together until the end of the last book of TMI. There was an attraction in the first book, sure. Magnus is interested in that nice quiet shadowhunter. Alec is impressed by the sparkly powerful warlock. But Alec is a minor and he's deep inside the closet. So Magnus befriends him, show Alec that it is okay to not conform to the norm. To be different. Alec becomes Magnus' friend too, and he visits him just to hang out. Not to ask for anything of the High Warlock, but to watch a movie with Magnus Bane. By the third book, they are talking about feelings, about their perspectives in life. Alec is finally ready to admit he's gay. Magnus is there for him. Magnus is finally ready to open up about his past, his former relationships. To trust someone again. Alec listens to him, truly listens. When Max dies, Magnus is there to console Alec, to hold him and help him through it. Alec asks Magnus to share the alliance rune with him, despite his parents' protest. Fuck them. In the fourth book, Maia introduces Alec to a nice werewolf boy his age and they kiss. It breaks Magnus' heart, but he puts on a smile on his face and supports the brief relationship, because Alec is finally allowing himself to live and experiment. The fact that Magnus hooks up a seelie girl and a mundane man back to back means nothing. Finally, in the fifth book there is no denying the reason why they are the first person the other calls when something happens, be it nice or bad. There is a reason they sigh in relief whenever they see each other and know they are alright for another day. Still, they say nothing for there is a war happening and more important things to do. Or so they say. Until Magnus is taken by the Seelies and Alec realizes he could truly lose him. That even though Magnus is immortal, that doesn't mean he can't be killed. Until Magnus realizes that just because he can wait forever, it doesn't mean he should. Cue mission to Hell dimension and a big "I love you" kiss when they get together in the end.
