Day 21 of Avian August 2025, Birds of Hawaii, hosted by @cookiedoves: Red-whiskered Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus)
The charismatic red-whiskered bulbul is native to tropical parts of Asia. In the 1960s, captive birds either escaped or were illegally released on Oʻahu, where they have since established a breeding population.
These birds have an omnivorous diet, but their favorite food is fruit. They are largely responsible for spreading the seeds of many plants considered invasive on the island, including the hard-to-kill noxious weed, ivy gourd (Coccinia grandis). Still, they are quite pretty birds. :)
