Bodyguard AU timeline/round-up

In terms of timeline, I didn’t have a particular one in mind as I was writing it, but now that I look back I can see my brain did a Smart thing and wrote them in order:

1. #8.  “this might be unprofessional, but can i please get a cuddle”

Hurt/Comfort; LWJ taking care of WWX after an attack

2.  #19.  “you look… different out of uniform”

Fluff; WWX visits LWJ at his apartment on his day off

LWJ starts realising he might have caught Feelings

3.  #25.  “let me fix you up”

Hurt/Comfort; LWJ protects WWX from a knife attack at an event

Hand kiss and WWX displaying open Affection.

4. #20.  “please don’t pretend to care more than you actually do” // #26.  “i think i want you to be more than just my bodyguard/client”

Mild angst; LWJ confronts WWX after learning WWX had him reassigned.

Love confession!

There’s probably a big timeline gap between #3 and #4, because somewhere in between then the thing with Wen Chao happens (kinda what the Wang Lingjiao thing was setting up in #3) and LWJ gets shot and ends up in hospital, which triggers #4.

I have approximate knowledge of many novel things at this point -- I’ve seen some quote posts and I’ve read some comparisons -- but I know that there’s a lot about the novel that I’m not sure if what I ‘know’ are actually novel-canon or are things I read in fanfic, lol.

That’s right, Xiao Zhan wrote a lengthy meta on his understanding of Wei Wuxian while the live action was still airing, you can find the translation there! (He also briefly touched upon his thoughts on the character in this interview.)

That essay of his really shows the deep consideration he gives to his role as an actor and how thoughtful he is as a person…

I am so glad to have found your blog. Thx for the translations.I stumbled on Untamed by chance and omg 😮. I have read the eng translation of the novel. I am very curious about the web novel idea. Is the author MTXT popular in China? I can’t google anything due to language barrier. Is it common in China for tv shows being produced based on web novels? Do common folks in China feel ok about the canon gay couple in the novel/story? Or is bromance version more acceptable? Sorry for so many question

Hello and welcome to the fandom! 

Webnovels are extremely popular in China so it’s quite common for a TV drama to be based on one. Some of most successful Chinese dramas in recent years such as Nirvana in Fire are also webnovel adaptations.

However, it’s not common for dramas to be inspired by BL (Boys Love) novels due to strict restrictions on what is allowed to be portrayed on screen in China. That’s also why The Untamed does not depict an overt romantic relationship.

This article is pretty interesting if you want to learn more about the subject, it also mentions Guardian, another popular BL webnovel that was toned down in its adaptation.
